Hello

I have just registered here in order to ask this question, I hope someone can help.

My brother in law wants something for christmas that I know nothing about, but from the content of this forum I'm sure you all do. What he wants is a Warhammer 40000 figure (or figures I guess), he says it must be metal. That's all I have..

Our budget is £30-£50. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Hi - welcome to the site. It would help us to help you if we knew a little more. Does he collect anything already? Will this be his first Warhammer item? If he is already into the hobby then we can offer more advice if we know what he currently collects.....

I concur... it would be great to know if he already plays the game and if so what he collects.

Well if all else fails I can do him 2 6mm Armies in metal for that money, they will be ancients though not Warhammer, but hey....

To be honest I dont think he plays the game, he just enjoys painting the models. As far as I know he only has a couple of figures so far, all the info we have is 'Warhammer' and 40000

I can get the wife to question him a bit more if necessary.

I agree that you need to find out more. There is a vast amount of models available, and it would be so easy to get things wrong.
I suggest asking exactly what it is he wants, or purchase some GW gift vouchers so that he can choose himself.
I used to work for GW ages ago and had to help parents buy stuff for their children. They had no idea what they were looking for and it was quite hard working out what they wanted. GW started doing christmas lists, a leaflet which the child could tick the boxes on, which the parent would bring to us and we could collect it all up while they waited. One of GW's best ideas!

If its painting for painting's sake, Forgeworld might be a good place, however, their delivery times may put pay to having it for christmas...

Actually they have a big banner saying that you'll get stuff for Christmas, so, meh.

Why metal? Plastic is easier to work with (gluing chopping and filling if he models) and now that GW staffers don't get stuff at led weight or whatever they called it, metal is expensive..

A good place to buy from.. if a little rubbish at showing you what your buying (since when did they have no pics )
Assualt on black reach is a good purchase for a few reasons
It has lots and lots of models (good to practice on until you get good).Good for if he just wants to get 9 right arms and stick them all onto one blokes head depending on how old he is
It has 2 main races so if the bloke doesn't like painting lots of armour he can paint lots of green flesh instead.
It has vehicles and what you and I in the real world would call vehicles.. big robot thing (dreadnought) and flying motorbikes (dethcoptas)
It is also good if he ever intends to play with them.. because it comes with the full basic rules and a few dice and templates (you can play with what is in the box)
Its comparitively cheap.. some folks buy it just for the odd thing then sell on or swap other bits.. if your buying led its the price of around the price of 10 Vostroyan Officers (led models who look like cossacks) and its resale value doesn't lose all that much (compared to if you buy an unpopular led old model which people do not wish to pay for from ebay or something)

The only downside I can see is.. if he wants really really big things (like 2 demon princes but then your money won't go very far.. and hopefully the dreadnought is a big thing he'll enjoy painting).. and if he gets annoyed by blown plastic.. you do have to spend a fair while removing "flash" from the models (imperfection seem lines where the presses joined) but similar problems occur for "led" (not really led) too... its just he'll have so many less models he won't notice (I wouldn't walk straight into buying from forgeworld.. stuff is expensive and awkward to keep on a shelf (doesn't depreciate much though) Other downside I guess is that its space marines and Orks and if he's started collecting eldar (one of the other race) then it won't help him much.

(for a comparison why not have a quick glance at herne's gallery of heros for inspiration http://www.ageofstrife.com/modules.php? ... php&page=1 the last one on page 2 is a forgeworld model made of resin.. but could you tell that one wasn't metal? also see top right the 2 painting competitions that have just finsihed involved simple models click fitted together from the assualt on black reach boxset)

So try to work out what I've said (most people say it takes 3 readings ) and ask your brother in law why metal is so important.
What do you lot say to that..is that a fine noob recomendation?

Unfortunately this is something that will take time to address - while GW allows the box art to be used, the pics on their site of painted figures cannot, something about the images only being licensed for use on the GW site. I guess what we need to add is a way for customers to send us pictures of their painted figures with permission to use them, and we could put those on the site. Or Gav could take photos of the actual blisters with the figure inside them, but in most cases you won't be able to tell what it is ...

GW are touchy and pains in the arse about online retailers using ifficial pictures etc, at least we don't have the American issue of no online shopping cart for GW stuff (see TheWarstore for an example).

If it's just for painting then I think it might be a good idea to see if there is a particular theme to the models he has in mind. If not, we can certainly recommend some individual pieces that would work for him.

I'm sure Mr6 will paint em, quick and well, and take pics if it means he gets to keep the models..It will be like the old deals he used to do with GW shops

personally, as a 40K player myself, i would never ask someone to get me something without being totally specific about what i want. my wife and i play and collect together, and i wouldnt even want her to try and guess what i want next.

even if he paints anything and everything just for fun, theres still the issue of buying him models he already has.

i would much prefer an envelope stuffed with cash than a "lucky dip" of models that i would have to take back myself for a refund in 99.99% of cases.

alternatively, why not ask your brother in law to sit with you at the computer and choose what he wants for himself, and you will order it for him. that way he gets what he actually wants (and saves himself a wasted trip to get it exchanged) and you get to be involved with the gift (much more than if you just put money in a card and thought no more about it).

as to not having pics on the GF site - thats not too much of an issue IMO: go to the GW website for all the flashy pics, and then once you know what you want go to the GF website for the superior price.

Course it is, especially when you have to now dig round their unnavigatable tosh to try to winkle pick out their pics. its asking someone to go through the woolies sale wrestle with a grandma to look at the last makka pakka- dance dance crazy ogghog dancer, then hand it back to the lady walk out the shop.. walk down the road to WHsmiths and see if they stock the item by the same name.
Internets makes that process quicker.. but its still not what a buyer wants to have to do.

TBH, apart from loading times, im not having that many problems finding things on the GW site (models are easy, but accessories can be a little trickier) - the search engine even seems to work.
