I followed a similar path to you it seems.
Reading your post has reminded me of something.

In the 80's and at school, no money to buy ad+d books, so we used to go to the store and have a quick look through monster manuals for inspiration.

I saw this miraculous creature... the netherlandal.
Sounds cool, so I turned it into a platemail fighter fireball spewing nightmare and it became feared across the land.

It got downgraded a bit when we finally got the books.
To a neanderthal.
