Welcome to aos sigmar!!!

Only played fantasy a few times (when I was at school!!! and I have a telegram from the queen*).

*No, not 100 years old, it said "Stop climbing over my walls or I'll set the dooorgs on you."

Ps, I don't know if you know, but I know the message above was sent by Elvis, yes Elvis.

Welcome Sigmar. It's always good to have some more fantasy players on board :)

I like the way you have done the batreps (show by points, by length etc).

Welcome to the site. As already suggested, feel free to post in the WFB section as it could do with the cobwebs being moved about a bit :) Glad to see you like the site (I assume that's what you mean by presentation), however be warned that it's in a constant state of flux (well, as constant as I can get it tinkering in my spare time both at home and at work ;)) so don't be put off if suddenly changes - the residents will be still be as friendly as ever (and in the case of ruffian4, occassionally a little too friendly ...)

Wow, what a great welcome, thanks everyone.

All I have right now is Fantasy armies, 7 of them - largely unpainted :(

I am just experimenting with the idea of 40k because my regular gaming buddy has just got into the concept so I suspect he'll want a willing enemy :)

I have a fantasy blog for anyone interested in Fantasy:-

http://battlereporter.blogspot.com

A couple of quick questions... are the armies well balanced and, if you were to recommend an army for a new player (I guess, an army with a broad range of tactics which is less complicated to use - if one exists) which one would it be and why ?

I'm more interested in armies of individual models as opposed to those consisting of large amounts of armour and tanks. I also want a flexible army with numerous tactical options so Ido not end up getting sucked into buying multiple armies because I'm nothappy with my first choice.

For example, if I were recommending Fantasy armies for new players I would tell them to try High Elves because they are easy to understand, can be used in smaller raiding type scenarios for new players and they are adept in combat, missile fire and magic. Good all rounders.

Re 40k armies, I hate to say it, but marines (vanilla out of the new codex) are probably the most flexible and fit the "raiding party" type ideal.

Because in ni small ammount the host of new shiny toys, but, know that if you do partake of this host, it will portray you as a parasite of course...

Other than that (you get browny points for not being a marine in a lot of places), maybe the eldar.
Very flexible, capable of all battlefield tasks, except being cannon fodder and quite elite in their feel.

Eldar are similar to the High Elves in that regard (as you would imagine).

The alternative to loyalist marines is to go Chaos marine.

Nids, Orks and IG will be horde armies (typically).

What is your friend thinking of taking? That might help in your choice of army (i.e. don't both choose marines).

Where in the UK are you based?

hi there, my buddy will probably go for Marines, although I need to check to be sure.

There is one other thing, they need to be easy to paint :(

mattjgilbert, I'm based in London.

Welcome to the site. :D
Its a bit like fantasy some armies have a lot of stuff that can all do something.. some lists have such obviously cheap and good units that other options that would look sensible look underpowered (e.g. Orks codex- boyz and kanz are so good everything else looksless good (but only in comparison to the superness of having 5 dreadnoughts for 225 points)Some lists have a few options that are good and then some that are very sub par (why nearly every chaos list that comes out more than twice has the lash, oblits or a vindie sprinkled with plague marines, CSM or 1ksons for flavour).

If your not going with marines (power spiked and versatile(possibly versatile enough that you and your friend could both be marines and still have very different armeis) then eldar are a good one..variable model count nearly every option in the list has a purpose.. the tricky bit with eldar is that each unit is a special thing (your enemy unit is X you need to apply unit Y) building that jigsaw so that it is robust and sharp is a bit tricky (for me)compared to the basic space marine who with a special weapon and a transport is capable of doing most things.. If you decide to go for horde (orks nids etc) then its all about being a gearhead and tuning your engine so they get across the table as quickly as possible whilst being hurt as little as possible (i'm not a gearhead in real life but I make 40k "tides" quite easily)..very different ways of tinkering.
What do you like the idea of .. being bigger than your enemy (nid zilla, chaos with Demon princes, greater demons and other big stuff, being faster than your enemy (mech eldar stuff,I guess mech tau although I haven't seen them around much of late, being more shooty than your enemy(tau, or guard new codex just round the bend)
""Fantasy armies, 7 of them "" You got anything that will translate to 40k, demons? that would be cheap.
