The biggest mistake that I made was to paint it with cheap craft paint, when I tried to do some washes the paint started to run, not a good look, it will be repainted one day when I learn how to paint terrain better.

Working with plaster was slow but made detailing very easy.

Just to elaborate a little...

Warseer has a big member base, which means its always full, but people are always coming and going.
AoS has has fewer members, but we all know eachother - there is more of a relaxed atmosphere. Not as busy, but certainly more... cosy.

For my terrain pieces, I use artists acrylic that I get from the local artist supply store. Should be available from craft stores as well. You just need a few basic colors (white, black, sienna, burnt umber, sap green) and they can be mixed and thinned very well. The price is reasonable, I got a 250 ml tube for under $10.00 and I haven't even used 1/4 of it yet.
Plaster is good, but you might want to try hydrocal or dental plaster (you can find both on ebay). They set up a little slower, but have better compression and are a bit more chip resistant than plaster. I use them for molding rocks and building pieces using hirst arts molds.

@ Timewiz, found a local supplier of Hydrocal and ultacal plaster, ultracal has a warning about rapid set generating a lot of heat, does hydrocal suffer from the same problem?

No, it actually works quite well (the hydrocal). Doesn't generate heat, if you mix it slowly it doesn't mix a lot of bubbles in it, set up nicely and takes stain and paint fairly well. It can be sanded and chiseled into. I used it to make these,

I recommend it over plaster. I found that plaster can distort while setting up, and is generally too fragile when cast. Too easy to get chipped up.
