I don't think your helping yourself posting pictures that belong to someone else when trying to prove you are who you say you are.

Old Dude posted the same painted slayer you did in this post

I agree it had some slower moments but, just combat all the way through? No story there, a game can be just combat, not a movie.

Oh, I agree there needs to be a storyline, but given that what I've seen so far had no combat at all it was far too slow in getting to what the whole point of what 40k is about. I'll try and watch it again tonight and post up opinions based on the whole thing, but I fear I'll be sorely disappointed. I've been an avid 40k fan since 1987, so I'm going to be one of the hardest to convince (although I do seem to occassionally find crap low budge films to be highly entertaining, which is why Split Second is in my DVD collection :P)

To attempt to authenticate who you are isn't hard - send me a PM with your POP6 contact details including a studio based email address, I'll write to you, and if you reply confirming you are who you say you are that's pretty much done (either it's you, or you know someone at the studio who is willing to reply pretending to be you). Hiding behind anonymising services (Hotspot Shield) and posting pics that appear to be belong to other members doesn't help either (unless you are in fact also OldDude ... 8O ).

You also don't need to post single replies to every person you're quoting - use the tickboxes in the thread review below the reply box to quote multiple posts in one go.

Watched it, managed to stay awake this time but I felt myself drifting a few times. Action almost non-existent for the first 2/3 of the movie, the Marines walked like my kids did when they were 2 and had just filled their nappies. The one action scene with more than 1 enemy involved a bunch of Black Legion mindlessly running into gunfire, and was over very quickly. Plot was highly predictable, and full of fluff mistakes - did anyone involved in the script ever play 40k, or read any of the background?

Why did the Marines keep whinging like spoilt brats, and trying to out do each other? These were supposed to be novices in one of the most pious and rigidly trained chapters, by the time they left the scout company and became full battle brothers they should have already learnt how to behave. If it had been friendly banter along the lines of the Space Wolves novels, and they'd been Space Wolves, it probably would have worked, but it wasn't and they weren't.

On the whole very disappointing. The DoW trailers and cutscenes strung together would have been much better viewing. Getting the studio that did the DoW cutscenes involved in the animation would have given the movie a much better chance of feeling less like one-man fan flick.

Definitely won't be buying the Blu-ray, and doubt I'll bother watching the DVD again. I'll probably offload it if the prices creep up.

I can’t help but agree.

Well Spack you’ve been busy. As a matter of fact I am OldDude, but I was hoping to keep my business life and private fun time separate, so much for that. Sorry, if anyone felt deceived, but I value my privacy.

As for proof of who I am I offer the following:

The guy in front of the computer is not me, it’s one of the animators, I asked him to open up the wire frame just for you, Spack. The other is at my home with the slayer in question. It’s one of my favourites. I hope you will accept my mea culpa.

I am glad you, at least, gave the movie a second chance. Sorry you didn’t like it. The script was written by Dan Abnett and was approved by GW. Would I have written it differently, yes, but it would have been in crayon.

I like Dan Abnett's novels, but an author of novels does not necessarily make a good screenwriter. A slow start can work well in a novel where it's only 5%-10% of the entire book, but movies are rarely paced the same as a novel; they are very different mediums. I can only assume that he was given quite a restrictive framework to work to that included keeping the number of on-screen animated models to a minimum, as he tends to be very good at writing about large scale epic battles and I feel that's where the movie should have gone; and before you mention, yes Iron Snakes was mostly about a single Marine, but it was done with such detail that it worked really well - and if Dan Abnett had used that as a basis for the movie it would, at least to me, have been a better film as there would have been no bickering between the main characters to slow things down.

Unfortunately GW have proved repeatedly over time that they're really good at forgetting their game history, most of the guys who created 40k no longer work there. I still remember my first visit to Warhammer World and looking at the "museum", I have more late 80s GW/Citadel figures in my collection than GW did in the entire room. I'd take a guess that at least 90% of the museum figures were less than 3 years old.

At the end of the day a 40k movie is only going to really appeal to the long term fans of the storyline, and that means that keeping to the established background is really important. If the movie was aimed at the kids (and by that I mean late teenagers) then I guess maybe that would explain why it was done the way it was, but they're also the audience most likely to move away from the hobby. By targetting the players who have stuck with it through thick and thin there's more chance of longer term repeat business; and they tend to have more disposable income to spend on flashy boxed sets - there's a good reason why most DVD movies come in multiple formats, the basic single disc ones are aimed at the customers who just want the film with no extras and the lowest price, and the multidisc special editions with DTS and a raft of extras are aimed at those with higher end systems and more money to spare. Codex Pictures would probably have sold a lot more DVDs had there been a basic single disc no-frills option.

These are just my personal opinions, and highly unlikely to be taken seriously by any marketing person. I don't work in the industry either (not the movie industry, but I do work in the book industry at a wholesaler/distributor/retailer, have friends who are authors, and friends who work for publishers, so do have almost 20 years experience of what happens in the book industry and how it differs radically to other media types) so any figures I've stated are purely anecdotal. But given the reviews I've seen on many other 40k/GW related forums I know I'm not alone, and I can't be too far off the target market - middle aged (jeez, 40 this year, ), married with children (who will likely end up being taught to play 40k, they both enjoy Space Hulk), long term (rapidly approaching 25 years) fan of 40k (and a Citadel customer long before that too), so entrenched in the hobby that I run a couple of 40k related websites, and a GW independent retailer to boot (so I have a vested interest in GW continuing in business for as long as possible).

EDIT: 1st pic and 2nd pics, how come there's apparent edge enhancement artifacting on the post-it and not on anything else in the rest of the pic? And comparing the post-its in PS it's exactly a 1 degree of rotation between the alignment of the post-its. I also had a graphic designer take a look and he pointed out that post-it allows light through in your miniature photos but there's no sign of lightening in the photos where it's stuck to a screen that is projecting light. Unfortunately while the pics could be genuine they're also pretty easy to fake. As you can tell I spend time researching before accepting what people tell me - part of my natural suspicion of those I've never met in person, and it's stood me in good stead in my job as one of my roles is weeding out fraudsters trying to scam the company I work for.

There also is no shadow from the post-it on the screen. Given the natural curl of a post-it and the fact that you can see the curl, but it appears 2d on the screen pics makes it appear more faked.

Maybe he should have put a shoe on his head...
On translucence ... (possibly) if the light source is powerful enough and the post-it is of the right consistency it would appear not to show the light from behind, because of the refraction of the flash on its surface from POV.
Coincidently side lighting in a darker area and other diffusion techniques of photographers might also excuse the borders of the 2d sticker looking odd/as the sides are the bits highlighted by the offset lights.. (long shot but thought it was worth 'just sayin')

Olddude, I'm afraid there is too much cynicism in this strange old world (especially round here where the majority of posters are old dudes themselves, the kids are the ones under30) , and far too many people out there in little hothouses looking to see chinks of naivety in peoples world wearyness armour. Spack has given you a way to pass his friend or foe challenge, it appears that you have access to people who could meet such expectations and (by the grace of your photos) are willing to grant you such favours, I would prefer the mild antagonism in the thread cease, and it is in your interest for more responses from the wider forum this to happen.

Samuel Goldwyns formula for a good film script, start with a volcano and build to a big finish.
