You could say the same thing about buying hardbacked over softbacked books. Personaly I wouldn't buy any of the limited edition codexs/rule books. However if I had the coin to spare and wasn't on a budget I'd go for it every time. I won't call people stupid though just because I have to be more frugal than people who have a higher disposable income than me.

The correct term is "irrational" not "stupid" ;)

I know I have become far more critical of GW in the last 3 to 4 years, but even £35 for a 176 page book is outrageous. There is no real justification for this, it is simple fleecing of the community. GW know people WILL buy these books. As gamers we are all drawn in because the universe that surrounds the game is so well detailed - It's a criticism I have often seen of other gaming systems. Should that stops us from trying out other systems? No. Does it? Yes - on occassion. I'm as guilty of that as anyone - Deadzone may give me an alternative, but I still maintain my DA army. I love the full, detailed history, the fact it is a little different from the laws laid out by the giant smurf, their monastic look. I just don't like the new rules, or their interaction with them.

Deep down I know I will still spend money with GW, I'll just resent each penny more than the last!

If that's the case they are fools for not charging more than £35.

They did charge more and were justified judging by the ltd editions selling out. I wonder just how many of those were bought by gamers and not internet dealers? Either way, its another green light to GW that their pricing structure is correct.

This proves you wrong, its a business that understands its products. People will buy there stuff, it might not be the same people who bought it 5 years ago, but someone will.

I expect to see an argument about price increases to balance out loss of volume of sales, but my reply would be, isn't that better for them as a business they make the same money for selling less stuff. Sort of like the difference between selling Aston Martins and fords.

Not if you're selling a network effect product.

Generally, not when you're in possession of a high fixed cost base.

Its all down how much people are prepare to spend on their favourite hobby. In my opinion, and it is only that I got fed up when the new 6th Ed rules came out at a large price increase and then £35 for a Codex is in my eyes too much for my budget. I have switched over to Bolt Action (£25 for rule book, £15ish for Army Books) mainly because of the following reasons:
1/ The rules system I enjoy better than 40K
2/ It is cheaper
3/ It is not prone to the latest Codex, with the shinest toys wins most games.
If people like 40K that is good, it has lost its appeal to me and I have been playing 40K since 2nd Ed (17+ years).
GW still make amazing models and I still buy the odd one just for fun even though I don't play.
I am still keeping my Space Wolves but at this moment in time they are in stasis

Whilst the first is subjective (and the second is true.. but yawn)..and you can say that.. the 3rd point just isn't true.
Codex by codex when released, only guard (getting really really old now) crons (moderately old now) completely hammered everyone from launch, nids..did nothing.grey knights the web moaned.. but it didn't materialise as winners in tourneys they were too rock to decent pool of players paper..new DA lambasted for not pushing up the power spiral.. chaos lacking some internal balance in that its underwhelming for roxxers unless you take 3 robot chickens (again).
tau doing ok.. eldar yet to see anything horrific (if anything most builds toned down).
Shinest toys.. again aside from necron flyer spam and robot chicken breadknife.. meh, they go down to people who have just good army builds of beaky marine limited release for each of those there is a landspeeder storm, 2 wraithlords for twice the price, a dark angels floating cathedral and utter tosh flyers that the web forgets about instantly because they weren't awesome.

The web (especially the web that no longer plays and just listens to other people amplifying certain loud strands ) has a tendency to ignore balance and mediocrity.. its very like the sun newspaper..day before the parliamentary vote= pics of missile systems headline "we're going to war!!" or something similar.. morning after the vote.. with massive diplomacy shuttles everywhere and crazynesss pushing presidents to shuffle..headline "vinnie jones (retired footballer/colloumnist) says some manager of some football thing should get punched in the balls (for gambling debts)"

Point taken KMB, I was never much of a tournament player and only tended to play against club members, the majority at the time were 14-18 age band who did fall for buying the latest shiney and codex just to win.
I did not mean for my post to sound like I was lecturing about why I have gone away from GW it was only voicing the reasons why I do not enjoy the game any more, which is sad because 40K was got me back into wargaming.
I am not trying to slag off anyone who still love the game, because if we all like the same thing the world would be a very dull place.
