Decals

Postby KInG » Wed Mar 05, 2014 10:33 am

This made me laugh. Ive been doing wargaming now for a few years. Not sure how long exactly, and compared to most, not long at all, something like 9-10 years I think. If anyone knows when 4th ed W40K was released, that was when ;)

And last night was the first time I ever put a decal on a model!!! (Just had another thought) does that mean not one single model of mine is finished then) lol

So, applying decals, I was told use GW medium on area where decal is going, then apply decal, and use cotton bud or paper towel to squeeze out the water, then let dry overnight, apply ardcoat next and then matt spray over it or matt paint.

Im at the drying stage and tonight will finish it.

I was dubious of the one on the radiator gill, as I had to cut it into 4 pieces!! but its come out quite well. :D

Who's a clever boy ;)

Nice one sir :D
I tend to use Decal Setting solutions such as microsol or microset which softens the decals and allow them to follow contours easier. I first put gloss varnish on the area where they are going, apply the decal, when dry give it a thin coat of gloss varnish, once that is dry spray the entire model with a matt varnish. Job done 8O

Nige, 4th Ed was released in 2004. Sad that I actually know that!

I do the same steps as skywalker. Gives very satisfactory results.

@KInG - The decals came out really nice, especially the ones on the grill cover. Those must have been a bear to cut properly.

I use gloss before but not after applying the decal.

Using the gloss before application gives the decal a nice smooth surface to adhere to, it also prevents getting air bubbles under the decal.

After I apply the decal and it sets for a few minutes I apply micro sol to it to soften it and let it settle down better.

Once that's dry I finish up any weathering and then overcoat the model with dullcote (matte spray).

(And I don't believe for a second that it's Gav's fault) ;)

Using gloss before helps make a smooth surface and means you are less likely to get air bubbles. Softening/setting solutions will really help with this too (as noted by the guys above). Matte varnish on top to stop them rubbing off (as you would with paint anyway).

I found that putting a thin coat of gloss varnish on top of the decal helps to protect it especially on uneven or curved surfaces.
