Defence Laser

Postby KInG » Thu Nov 08, 2007 8:32 pm

I've decided to make up one of these for my Apoc games. How could anyone resist a destroyer weapon AP2 which uses a 10" ord template :)

Image

Cool anti asset capabilities also, and with my containment fence around it also from FW it should be quite high up on the enemy's priority list near my titan :D

So what can I make it from. I can see 2 bike cogs in the make up at the top and a Y joint from waste piping. Also the very tip of the barrel is from a coke bottle. But the rest, apart from the obvious CoD sprues used, is a mistery to me. I would really appreciate some insight/ideas guys. Thx.

Oh and the FW TL AA AC turrets are wrong. This should only have normal ACs not the long barrelled ones pictured, so was thinking of buying the FW ones like this instead:

If you help me find the parts, I'll do a W.I.P. here so you can see it coming together.

In hindsight though, the Long Barrelled ones seems the better purchase points wise. 80pts instead of 50pts. I could just make the defense laserin such a way that when I bought the turrets seperately they could sit on it.

This though would mean that the SHT laser would have less weapons to get blown off, and the LBACs could be targeted seperatly.... mmm decisions decisions.

Right the decision is.... the smaller ones on the defense laser adding to the number of weapons available to 'be destroyed' and harder to be targeted by the flyers they want to shoot.

Remember that you don't have to build it identically to the GW version.

I am considering building a Defense Laser as well. I am currently planning on building it in a modular manner so that it will consist of the Laser Tower, and I hope to include positions for the eight TL Heavy Bolters. Then there will be two additional towers for the AA Autocannons. This will allow me to add/remove components based upon what I pay for.

I think the most difficult part will be thinking up a suitable pompous sounding name fom mine.

How about:

The Finger of The Emperor?

It need not be that hard, actually, to construct this defence tower...This is my take on it:

The separate towers could probably be made with styrofoam cardbards. They are about the same size, so cutting out the different walls will not be a problem.
The base of the laser could be carved out of a solid block of styrofoam (the blue or pink one you can buy in any larger wardwood store).
The walls of the main tower could also be cut out of styrofoam cardboard, and glued together.
The round sections of the defence laser can easilly be created by using balls of styrofoam. They can be purchased in pretty much any larger hobby store.
For decorations and pipes...use plastic cardboards for decorative elements, whatever bits you can get your hands on and visit your local hardwood store to find the different sizes of plastic pipes you need.

When using the plastic card, what is the best way to form a corner?

Score the card?
Use small sections of timber inside the corner?
Glue the two edges directly?

And what thickness do our 'experienced modellers' recommend for the large wall sections?

1mm?
2mm?
3mm?
5mm?

ive never bought one myself, but i would expect to find them in a hobby shop, or in a flower arranging shop. :)

p.s. linkies:
http://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/ideas_library/idea_193.html
(says to use a foam sphere)
http://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/PRODUCT_LIST/PROD2.HTM
(says they sell foam)
put the two together and it might be worth giving them a ring...
