Excuse me Mr Hive Tyrant, do you ever trip over your talons?

Want to show off your painted figures? Got a cool conversion? Need some ideas?

Excuse me Mr Hive Tyrant, do you ever trip over your talons?

So - I'll been revitalising my old Hive Tyrant, rebasing it onto a 60mm base for better stability (used to always fall over on the old 40mm base).

Added some twin linked devourers to the wings...

I also wanted to replace the old styled scything talons with the newer plastic carnifex ones, so I painted up a couple of sets of the smaller talons, and drilled some holes for pinning them to the Hive Tyrants torso...

Dry fitting the Talons onto the model, and I'm now not convinced it will work...

I dont know... but to me it looks a little too cluttered, clumsy and awkward?
The talons look too bulky almost as if he would trip over them.

What do you reckon, what do you recommend, should I just revert back to the older talons? Any other ideas?

Don't you have one pair of appendages too many on that model?

I never really got the "must only ever have six limbs" in order to be a really Nid!

I've always thought of my nids as "cutting edge" when it came to evolution - they've simply evolved faster than other Hive fleets beyond the "six limb mold" :D

...or perhaps Fabius Bile captured a baby tyrant and performed some revolutionary gentic manipulatory experiments on it causing it to spontaneously mutant and sprout another set of limbs in the form of wings.. after which it escapes, flies off and spawns another hive fleet etc.... highly unlikely.....but then so are Space Marines :D

I think the issue with too many limbs is that Tyrant looks like it has two TL Devourers and two sets of Scything Talons.

As for the tripping hazards, you might want to consider a medium sized pair for the lower set.

I agree with you, the model looks clumsy, I would change the lower limbs for smaller ones, so that it looks more balanced. The upper ones need to remain big as they have further to go, so larger is better up there.

how does it look if you swap the left and right lower arms over, so the 4 talons come together like on the old Screamer Killer? :?:
(i.e. bottom 2 pointing upwards, top 2 pointing downwards)

cheers :)

This is my FW HT. He has double STs, but the 1st set, which are standard IIRC, are in the wings apparently. He doesn't have TL Devs tho. So not sure how they would go on.

You could swap one set of talons for Devs, claiming the wings are his 1st set of talons. That is how i would read the model on the table anyways. My mate has winged HT also, with TL devs on it (you should try that combo with rerolls on hits and then rerolls on wounds - very nasty). He has the wings on, and then 2 sets of devs (4 in total). I looks cool, and I undersand what he's got.

EDIT: btw this model is for sale, anyone interested make me an offer (no pms thanks).

Whats his load out? 1 set devourers+1 talons or 2 sets of devourers with the talons for looks?

If its two devourers, swap the talons for hormagaunt /genestealer talons to give a vestigial look.

I've done this for a carnifex that has twin barbed stranglers in a pose similar to the forgeworld barbed hierodule. The little talons are mounted low on the belly in a T Rex fashion.

EDIT: @King. £25 for the tyrant.

Hey Guys

Thanks for all the suggestions, I’ve posted my dilemma on various other forums and amongst all the comments I’ve received back I think I’ve managed to digest and amalgamate them all in a vat of Tyranid digestive juices and come up with a workable solution! :D

Heres an outline of my thought process and how I arrived at a solution.

I’m not too worried about what it represents on the gaming board – so long as there are hints of Devourers and Scything Talons, the number of sets of each isn’t a main concern of mine. The look I’m going for is a big gribbly, nasty, scary son of a b***h, kick a$$, fire magnet of a model.

The photos above showed the two sets of scything talons mounted on separate arms and attached to the torso were too big and cluttered any space leaving little area for any dynamic posing of the limbs, the solution: reduce the size of one or more arms OR loose a set of arms altogether.

So, (for now) I’ve settled on loosing the lower set of arms, however I’ve going to keep the “scything talon blade sections” and mount both onto the same arm. In addition to this I’ll add a further slightly smaller additional “blade” (from a the old styled scything talons) to create a pincher type claw, each arm will be made up of three talons – two on top, one under slung in a pincher type grip.

A little like this (thank you Ixyen)

http://s293.photobucket.com/albums/mm66 ... unclaw.jpg.

Once I’m done with the conversion and green stuff (this’ll really push my conversion and green stuffing abilities – but I’m hoping I can pull it off!) – I’ll look to position them in a horizontal plane on the Tyrant – much like a crab or lobster.

A little hard to envisage…so I made a little sketch of what I’m gunning for eventually.

I’ll post photos when its done!

Once again thanks for all the comments and suggestions. :D
