Forge World Gorgon Armoured Assault Transport

Postby Spack » Fri Aug 17, 2018 12:02 pm

It's been 7 years since I boxed all my 40k collection up in the attic, but this week I pulled out the Forge World Gorgon transport kit to put together. I bought this from a site member, and local club member, about 8 years ago. The cab had been glued together, and the armour plating on the gun positions was fragile and broken, but otherwise the kit was complete.

I started by trying to remove the cab roof intact, but it was glued in too firmly and the roof piece snapped. It will be easy to glue back in position and should be an invisible fix. Having the roof off will allow me to paint the driver, and I also found that the arms for one of the gunners had been used on the driver instead of the ones with the control levers do these will be swapped for the correct ones.

The hull areas where the tracks fit needed heavily modding with a Dremel cutting bit as the tracks would not fit into them. Made a huge mess, but at least I could then get the tracks in the right place.

Took a few hours of dry fit, trim, repeat, to get the hull to sit square enough that the front ramp would sit right. Quite a few parts were waited and needed some coaxing to fit correctly. Ended up using some sash clamps to hold it together while the E6000 glue dried as I couldn't find my trigger clamps.

The gunners were glued to the heavy stubbers, and the curved upper armour and ammo belts attached. These will be left loose from the gun platforms for painting. The searchlight rails are also loose, and will be glued onto place when the roof is refitted.

The majority of the build is complete, just the sponsons need fitting. I may magnetise the weapons so they can be swapped out if necessary, the kit comes with stubbers, bolters, and flamers.

Those photos were taken yesterday. Today when I took a fresh look at it I noticed that the front armour was twisted to the left. Measuring the upper pistons I found that the left one was about 3mm shorter than the right. Took a few minutes to detach both pistons, then got in with a thin Dremel cutting bit to trim the left one enough that I could get the armour plate squared up. It's now glued, and clamped to keep it in place while it sets fully.

Next step will be to mount the sponsons, get putty into all of the gaps, and tidy up and damaged or areas of thin resin

Good work. I think my brother runs a gorgon in his krieg force. I was tempted by one for my steel legion, but settled on the stormlord instead.

Still sorting out small details, the fuel barrels are now glued into place and the ladder railing. Also managed to carefully prise out the driver and seat so I could fit the correct arms, this will also making painting the cab and driver much easier.

I still haven't found the magnets for the sponson weapons, but I'm leaning towards heavy bolters. I might just glue the bolter parts into place and then proxy other weapons if needed. Then again the stubbers match the twin stubbers on the gun platforms so might look better. Hmmm.

Gorgon construction complete. Lots of filling and tidying up to do, and a little heating and bending here and there, but it's finally come together. Spent the past couple of hours carefully trimming flash off the infantry, had to glue a few feet back on but on the whole not too much of a problem.

But whoever designed the sponsons must spend his days coming up with practical jokes - had to use lots of boiling water to soften the ends enough to bend open gently so the gun mounts would fit in, and then bend them back and reset with cold water; although one end cracked off rather then bending. I've gone with heavy bolters for now, but when I find my magnets I'll remove them and have the guns interchangable.

The infantry are just standing on their own, they are not glued in. I'm probably going to split them into groups of three to use as artillery crew, but have the bases removable so I can put them inside for display.
