Hernes Valkyrie Flight wing

Hi all - Finally dusted off the camera and thought I'd record some more of my work for your perusal. Hope you like them!

The models took a lot of time to paint, espescially as I was trying to match the two newer plastic ones to a resin one I painted some time ago. (Hopefully, apart from the base, you can't really spot the difference.) One of the things I love about painting is trying to learn something new with each project. I tried to get transfers right with this one and finally think I cracked it. You can't see any transfer edging on these, because of the varnish application process I used - so the decals look part of the models painting rather than something stuck on afterwards.

Cheers all! :)

Lovely stuff. Great cockpit colours. So what was the transfer secret then?

Are these the ones that lost on the Sunday? :P

I could tell you - but then I'd have to kill you! ;-) Oh - go on then - as it's you....

I used a matt acrylic varnish from Windsor and Newtons 'Galeria' range. It's a matt varnish designed for painting over acrylic paintings like wot propper artists do and that. The process was:
1) Drop the transfer in water to soften off the backing.
2) While softening paint the acrylic varnish where the transfer was to go on the model
3) While the varnish was wet, pick up the transfer on a dry brushed bristles and dry it off as much as possible with soft cloth, dry brushes. (Yes - I did F*** up a lot of transfers at first!)
4) Apply the transfer carefully onto the wet varnish patch, then press down with brush bristles - again a dry brush tip.
5) Allow to dry until almost dry (If you do the next bit wet then the transfer just slides off)
6) Give the transfer and surrounding area another coat of varnish and allow to dry
7) Weather the model as normal, ensuring the transfer is included in process, finally spray varnish the model in the normal way.

There's probably easier methods out there, but it works for me. :-)

For my transfers, I use Microset. It softens the plastic on which the transfer is printed. When sufficiently softened, I use a bit of paper towel to press it to the model. After it dries, I varnish the entire model. I would think it is much easier than Herne's process, and it doesn't require an area of wet varnish onto which the dried transfer is placed.

Great stuff as usual Herne! :)
Your transfer technique is interesting..
Might have to try that out, as my way is a bit more fiddly.
I usually gloss varnish the part where the transfer goes, then when it's dry, apply the transfer.
Then I'll matt varnish the transfer(in the case of shoulder pads etc) or the whole model9in the case of vehicles)
Collector of Space Wolves, and all round awful painter!

Definitely worth the effort - you can't tell they're transfers at all.

I'll have to look out for some of that. How effective is the finish? Can you see the outline transfer at all?

Ironically the photos I took at WHW of our big game do show them from a distance togehter and for all the hard work and detailing that went onto mine, you can't tell the difference to your clean and simple effect! Swine.....

Actually I discovered I was paying the points in my list for an Inquisitor lord, instead of a normal inquisitor. Given the IL must take at least 3 additional stooges with him, he can't join other units. I'd made an error of assumption and paid the wrong points. (Don't worry - I was only using the standard Inq stats....) Now I've changed the list, meaning there's a standard inq in there at only 20 pts, saving me around 25 points. Coupled with dropping a plasma pistol it now means I can have 3 sets of Hvy Bolters on my Valkyries instead, and still have the Inq in there for the Tarot and other goodies. Hvy B's are called sponsons, but in practical terms are modelled with guardsmen shooting them from the ACCESS POINTS under the wings. There see - I TOLD you I could shoot through access points!!! :P :P
