Modeling Advice

Postby Jay » Wed Jun 08, 2011 12:27 am

Hey guys I'm about to start modeling the main bulk of my force, theres about 100-120 guardsmen in all. I've got the perfect heads for my Helghast army and a nice combination of bodies but I've hit a snag. The Helghast all wear masks with tubes to help them breath, not unlike the Steel Legion and DKoK.
Image

The problem is this; I've tried modeling the tubes simply by using milliput to role tubes and position them, this is fine for models who's chest is exposed but for the majority who have rifles across there chest its a nightmare and a mixed result. My second plan was to use electric wire from a old cable, so I splied it open but the wire is a just a bit to big. So any suggestions for a possible tube or material that is tiny in dimator and relatively cheap? If it's ridged that be even better.

There's always guitar string. If you coated it in some thinned down putty you might be able to cover up the ridges enough to give you a look close to this one.
If I find anything that looks better, I'll let you know.

I would suggest guitar strings as well. It amy be easier to put them in place and then give them a coat of super glue to help get rid of some of the ridge detail.

I'll add another vote for guitar string. I used some on my Sky Talon to replace the ribbed hosing on the clamps when I'd adjusted their positioning.

I used guitar string to replace a power cable on a FW Chaos Champion because it broke. Works great (it is ridged, not enough zoom in this pic).

If you want it smooth. Telephone cable might do it. Or network cable, not the thick outside stuff but the inner cables. They are plastic coated and small.

I've used telephone cable quite a bit for this sort of thing.

Cheers guys, I'll give it a whirl.

A mix of these as well, Shock Troopers Warfactory, though I might retain these (got 20) as Veterans.

Plan to spread out some of these bodies amongst the men as well,

I've got a few of other bits, Elysian forgeworld stuff, not sure how to use them just yet or just to keep them as a side project. Other then that I've been doing some (really bad) modeling, knee/elbow pads, modified shoulders and so on. When the project is a bit further along and I have a digital camera to hand I'll get some pics up.

Cool, my nurgle renegades have a mix of various pig iron and secrets of the third reich heads.
There are a few space/chaos marine gas mask heads in there too.

That's a point, telephone wire cabling on my ogryns ...

Nope, but I run the cable through some fine emery paper (just wrap it around quite tight and pull the cable through) so it may be that this gives a surface, paint and glue can key to.

Cheers for the info again that guitar string works perfect. Next question.
Can anyone suggest a suitable model to modify for this

Right, got 3 days in Leeds then I'm back and cracking on. Going to 'Boro to get the guitar strings, is there any particular size I should get considering the size of the IG/Pig Iron heads. The last question is I've been having trouble with the shoulders, see some of my men wont have the complete shoulder pads and so far I've resorted to use a scalpel, mixed results. I want to achieve this but not sure how, I've tried using a file but that's extremely time consuming. The only thing I could think of is using a miniature drill with some kind of sander end...if such a thing exists lol
Image

I'm also thinking of getting a make-a-mould kit, I want to create the Helghan symbol for the shoulder pads that do exist however my modeling skills suck frankly and to the best of my knowledge you can't buy print-transfer paper for plastic (i've only found ones for T-Shirt printing). I might resort to paying some one to create a master mould (I'd provide the materials) if anyone is upto the task... thinking £10 for there time.
