Painting Human Skin

Postby skywalker » Wed May 07, 2014 12:26 pm

Can anyone out there give me some suggestions of what shades etc to use when painting Humans? I used to use GW paint but I now tend to use Vallejo. Any hints and tips would be greatly appreciated......a tutorial would be nice :D

Depends on how detailed you want it to be. On my High Elves I started with a base coat of Bestial Brown. This was then layered with Dwarf Flesh, a heavy highlight of Vallejo flesh colour (can't remember the name, it's the one you get in the Quartermasters FoW box set) then Elf flesh and a final extreme highlight of white. Human flesh is similar, just use slightly darker flesh tones, leaving the white highlight out.

I tend not to use washes that much, preferring layering as a method. If you want a simpler, and quicker, method then what I use I'd suggest starting with a mid brown as a base coat, layering a mid flesh tone on as a first layer, leaving the brown in the deepest recesses, and a final highlight of a light flesh tone. You'll have to forgive me, I don't really use Vallejo paints so I'm unsure of what colours you should use.

Great technique here: Link

Otherwise, I use a simple basic flesh, devlan mud wash, highlight in flesh, then highlight again in flesh/white 70/30 mix. VERY basic, but does the rank and file! :)

what berger said. Its basic but fills the ranks up quickly and looks fine from a distance. It will fall apart if closely inspected of course, but if the model will come under that much scrutiny, then more layers and details will be needed.

I use Markb's approach.

Then I use the approach of not scrutinising my miniatures.

It still takes me months to paint anything though :(

Thanks for the advice, I will mainly be doing rank and file troops ( about 50 Russian WW2 and about 20 US WW2) for Bolt Action
