Washes

Postby ShmexyNiteTerror » Sat Jun 25, 2011 11:51 pm

Hello, I'm thinking of using washes on some of my models, but with me being a newbie to the painting and modeling, I dont know how to use washes.
Dont suppose someone could just guide me on how I use them, as this would be much apprichiated for the help. :)

Personally, since the event, I no longer wash.

But, that aside ...

There are basically 3 ways to use washes, a simple wash to shade, to stain and glazing.

Shading works, due to how thin the wash is. It will seep into all sorts of nooks and crannies and collect there providing instant shading.
The trick is to use the correct wash colour to match your task, the wash needing to be a fair bit darker than the base coat.

For instance, a good way to paint redish leather, is vermin fur, with a couple of coats of ogryn flesh. Even on flat surfaces, you will get variation on tone with a VERY BASIC rule being a few coats is way better that 1.

Staining is simply darkening a colour, watch out for puddling.

Glazing is using a colour wash to blend other colours together.
I do black on (the rough textured clothing of) guardsmen by undercoating black, dry brushing with grey.
This gives a bit of a rough, powdery look, so I glaze the harsh edges away with a wash of badab black.

Its quick and easy, just be wary of how much you use.
Also, washes can make stuff somewhat glossy, so its best to use a matt varnish on them.

Hope that's of use!

Although when in doubt brown.

Don't be afraid to try some things that seem counter intuitive at first. Blue and purple washes are great for shading reds!

Mr 6 told me to put a blue wash over a terracota red... terrible thing ruined the model.
Could you post some examples of people who did it right and made it look good? (I thought at the time he'd done it deliberately to kill off my nid painting project)

You can paint against the "grain" if you like. The idea is to have the colour wash into the details and depressions. It'll also slightly colour (stain) the red area too. You don't need to paint like normal paint.
