white for showcasing models. The black is cool for atmospheric shots, but details are lost.

Maybe that's true for someone with a good camera and set up. I'm having a fight either way with getting the reds to look right on screen so for now as these models aren't being painted to a showcase standard I'll stick with the black. I will how ever be looking in to my camera functions again to see if I can improve the colour balance on the white background shots.

Light blue is good, you can buy an a2 sheet of coloured paper for pennies in smiffs or any art shop.

I think I prefer the dark background in the main, but it could maybe benefit from a slightly longer exposure. What's your setup just now, it might be that a tweak of your settings will lift the model off the background a bit more.

I'll presume this is a dslr you're using. All I do for photos to showcase work I've done is to put the camera on auto and let it do the work. Have as much ambient light as you can. I use the inbuilt flash to counter my shaky hands. You don't need to do studio quality photos to show what you've been painting. If you were putting stuff on Cool mini or not etc then of course you'd want to start fiddling with settings.
I could get my tripod and studio flash kit out etc but its not needed for a painting blog. (that and it would really show up any sloppy painting I'd done... )

ah, its a compact. I'd suggest a small tripod, and give the macro function a go (bottom option, the flower on the four way round button).

I've been thinking about a tripod but they seem very expensive for a portable shelf. Any you could recommend?

Plenty of Gorillapod tripods on ebay for cheap:http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR11.TRC1.A0.H0.Xgorillapod&_nkw=gorillapod&_sacat=0
These are ideal for compacts and for minature work as they are small for a table top.
Otherwise, I'd suggest trawling the car boots and flea markets, as tripods are often flogged very cheap by ex camera enthusiasts / unwanted christmas present receivers.

Or just prop the compact camera on some books.

Ok I've finally got around to taking a photo of the Stromraven (relying on natural light is a total pain).

This Raven will be number 1 of my 187 squadron and will bare the name Murder, Death and Kill will follow later. I'm half way through Kill but I can't decide if Death will be black or not... I'm leaning towards it being red.

Next like a I say will be a second Stormraven and as I'd had left over paint in my air brush I attacked a Rhino as well as some sniper scouts. Busy busy busy!

I've not stopped painting I've just been ill. I'm now back in the hot seat and making progress once more. I have finished another Stormraven and a Rhino. I decided to take a group shot of the two Stormravens and the Rhino together. I would do a whole army shot but I currently lack the lighting, camera and space to stage such a thing!

I really need to paint more troops but I only have a scout squad at the moment so that will have to do. I will be buying the new Tactical box at some point, but I have a boat load of Terminators to build and paint as well as 5 more Dreadnoughts..... That's not to forget poor Corbulo who keeps getting sidelined.

Ok I finally got around to finishing my scout squad and vindicare assassin. I also finished up a second drop pod but didn't take a photo as they are super boring (but essential).

Anyone else think that the sergeant looks like Barney?

I know this isn't the standard look but I'm quite pleased with it.

Long time no update. Believe it or not this is the first ever Death Company I've ever painted for my Blood Angels. The details on these guys took forever to finish!

[URL=http://s457.photobucket.com/user/Troggman/media/Blood%20Angels/Death_zps33bz2tlo.jpg.html]Image[/URL

I've also finally gotten around to painting a Christmas Present I got of my besty. Commander R'alali. The rules for this guy are amazing but I've never been a fan of the XV9 suits.... That is until I put this one together, now I'm in lust!

Image

I'm not sure what I'll be working on next except for it'll be BA's as I've not got any Tau left to paint. I'll keep you guys posted with my progress.... Tau'va.
