Dae's Blood Angels

Postby Dae » Wed May 05, 2010 4:26 pm

Hullo!

I'm starting this plog to motivate myself to continue painting and hopefully get my first army completely painted to a table top standard.

I'm doing this more for the sake of painting itself rather than conforming to company markings or colourings.

Here are some WIP shots of a combat squad I did as a test for the colour scheme and a land speeder I'm working on.

Criticisms and suggestions welcome.

Looks very neat and tidy to me. I like the deeper red to the brighter shade (with bright orange highlights) that you often see.

That colour is great, much more bloody than the brighter red typically used for BA.

Thanks all for the kind words, yeah I've never really liked the very bright BA much neither but then I'm from the North East, which is pretty grim dark anyway. :)

Stunty, sure thing, I'll take some photos tomorrow and make a quick tutorial when I'm working on another assault squad, the paint scheme is really simple and mainly involves washes.

I started work on these about 2 weeks ago so I'll attach some images of what I've done since then, the light isn't fantastic as I only have the phone on my camera at the moment.

The flamer in the assault squad is just a placeholder til I can get my hands on some meltaguns.

Great so far. I like the use of the green to clash with the red, providing the counterpoint setting off the scheme nicely. I look forward to seeing more. ;-)

Working on the tutorial at the moment but it may take a little longer due to my hattrick of failure, knocking over two pots of wash then managing to get superglue on my brush, good times! Atleast it reasserts that I shouldn't paint before coffee in the morning.

In the mean time, a small update, this is the Emperor's Champion I had for sale but since nobody wanted him, so I decided to give him a jump pack and use him as a Sanguinary Priest for now.

I'm still working on him, thinking of stripping his sword arm completely, I tried to paint my first power weapon but it ended up looking quite horrific so I painted silver over, now the paint looks too thick.

Hello,

Sorry for the delay but here is the tutorial finally.

The lighting isn't the best I'm afraid and makes the models look a little darker, especially in the last images but hopefully you'll find the paint scheme as simple as I stated earlier.

Step One:

After priming black, I do two or three watered down coats of Mechrite Red, enough for an even coat across the model.

Step Two:

Any metallic areas are painted Boltgun Metal, any areas that will eventually be gold are painted Mithril Silver.

Step Three:

I wash the Boltgun Metal areas with Badab Black, I paint the eyes in Goblin Green and then highlight the tips of the armour with watered down Blood Red.

Don't worry if the highlight appears to be too much of a contrast to the Mechrite Red at the moment, the washes will see to that.

Any mistakes are easily corrected at this point, going back over areas in Mechrite Red or Mithril Silver as needed.

Step Four:

I wash all of the red armour with a light wash of Baal Red, wait for this to dry and see how the wash eventually sets. Don't worry if the model still looks flat like it's simply Mechrite Red still, the second coat does wonders.

After the model is dry, do another coat of Baal Red, I use quite a heavy wash this time and it really deepens the red, making it appear much richer.

Step Five:

After this, all that is left is the golden areas, for my gold I wash the Mithril Silver three times with Gryphonne Sepia or to your tastes, I've added some extra images below to display the difference in the gold and red with the washes.

Step Six: Done! Optional: Realise you've given your sergeant winged shoulderpads from the Death Company set that simply won't fit with a jump pack, so remove them and add smaller shoulderpads, using the winged shoulder pads to bling up your tactical sergeant instead along with a plasma pistol and power fist!

Edit: Just realised this should be in the Plog subforum sorry, feel free to move mods.

Good use of washes there, especially to make the gold.

I'll move the thread, hang on..

Great work. Love the washes - they make painting so much quicker and more professional. They're looking great. Tip for the photos - without getting all into light boxes and messing around with diffusers, simply get a daylight bulb into a lamp and position it above your camera and slightly angles off to one side - makes photos much brighter and clearer in the fore-ground. ;-)
