Dangerous Terrain (tutorial)

Postby timewizard » Tue Apr 20, 2010 2:42 am

I decided that my game table needed some areas of dangerous terrain. Just a couple of small pieces to start with to block off some movement points. I started with some thin MDF board and cut out a couple of random shapes. The rough measurements were about 5 1/2" X 2". I cut the shapes out with a jigsaw and then ground the edges down with a belt sander. Here's how they started.
Image

Being dangerous terrain I wanted to use some old barrels to kind of simulate a toxic spill or a toxic pool. I also wanted to give the impression of some depth, so a couple of GW barrels and a razor saw later...
Image

I used spackle (polyfilla over the pond) to build up the 'banks' of the toxic pools. I didnt want the MDF to warp on me so I first primed the bases with flat black. Then I added the spackle.

I wanted the illusion of both depth and currents of toxic goo, so I started with a couple of thin coats of Vallejo dark green, then GW goblin green and finally some GW scorpion green. I painted the sides of the pool my brown landscape color and went to work on the barrels.

The barrels were primed white, then got 4 or 5 coats of a brown wash called "Didi's Magic Brown" that I picked up from The War Store over here. After that, they got a light drybrush of GW blazing orange and got super glued down to the base. They were finally starting to look like something.
Image

To finish them off, I glued a couple of skulls from the bitz box down, then I added a couple of drops of GW bad moon yellow to a small cup of Vallejo Water Effects. Gave it a very slight stir with a toothpick to 'swirl' the color but not mix it completely. Then it got poured into the base and when it dried I put some dead looking static grass in a few spots.

I thought they came out pretty good, so I made a couple more in a little larger size. The second set are roughly 7" X 2 3/4". Gives me a few new and interesting terrain features for the board.

I'm just trying to figure out if I want to add more static grass or some brown flock to the 'plain' brown areas of the banks. All in all this wasn't a bad project to undertake. All of the materials were leftovers from other projects and stuff from the bitz box. It only took about 3 days to make them, and most of that was drying time. Hope you find this interesting and maybe even helpful! C&C welcome as always!

Very nice. The liquid look is very effective.

I like these. I reckon some detailing such a s sand for the non grassy bits will help. It looks a bit too smooth at the moment.

I agree. The middle looks good but the edges would benefit from some texture.

Nasty nasty goo goo (which is praise indeed, of course)!

If you want to add static grass to the edges, how about blackening it, as if it is really enpooped by the waste.
Perhaps a couple of sticks as dead trees?
