Dark Angels converted to Basic SM Codex

Postby KInG » Wed Feb 04, 2009 9:41 pm

Not sure this warrents a log at this point as quite alot of the work is done... but I've always wanted to have a log on each of my armies, but never seem to keep them updated or going.

Having read Herne's post about the lack of them, and knowing we are tring to expand the AOS_GF community, I thought I should try and set a good example and get one going, ensuring to keep it up to date on a regular basis.

I guess the 1st thing to do would be upload some images... so that will be my next task. I will photo the army as it is today (tmw morning actually), and then any work that I do in a particaulr session, even if its just undercoating, I will update the log, not necessarily with images if it's just undercoating, but a post to let the date be known and keep the log up to date. :D

The story on my army so far... I started this SM army when Codex: Dark Angels was released. The army list caught my eye 1st, and then the fluff afterwards. I entered the GT with them, Sammael in Speeder; 3 x 3 bikes; 3 x Atk Bks; 3 x Preds (LC HBs); 3 x Speeders. Came 2nd in heats and 17th in final so not a bad list. But then 5th came out and speeders and preds got nerfed by moving and firing S5+ weapons.

Then the new Codex: Space Marines came out. Written for 5th, unlike DA, and some niffty amy list choices. "But my models are all cloaked and DA icons" ... :( ..."Nevermind, I'll just use my DA models as normal marines" :)

And that's what I've done. So having changed a few models weaponry around like the speeders, from HB+MM to HB+CML, and bikes for basic tactical units, tanks for Dreadies + DPs and a few more, I was ready to enter this years GT heats where the list came 12th. Not so good but I had alot less playing time with it beforehand.

So, time for some images next. I'll show u my Pods and custom Ironclads. Then some of the new models for C:SM like the Redeemer, all Icon'd up for DA and some DA Chaptermaster and Capt convertions to 'count-as' the special characters in the new SM dex.

I am also relying on you guys to keep me on target with regular updates :) thx.

Right then, didn't quite get done what I wanted today, infact, as the reality of the task at hand, getting 4k of SM ready for the AoS weekend this weekend, I decided to reduce my work load by fielding alot more of my models that already had paint on them.

Heres all my SM that I currently have made atm, there's still another Redeemer and some SM troops to make, along with another 2 vindicators and possibly a LR Pometheus to convert, along with a couple of rhinos, but they may stay as Inquisoitor & Stormtrooper transports for now, until I see what is in the new IG dex.

Image

So to make up the points quickly for the weekend I thought best to concentrate on the 4 raiders that I had all logo'd up with DA icons, etc..

Image

My thinking was, as I have another std Raider made already, that I would paint 2 green for my normal marines to use and 2 bone white for 1st company's use; hence the two different undercoats. I'm going to give the black ones the same treatment as my other DA vehicles; airbrush green, wash black, then highlight with DA green and then a finer highlight of goblin green or was it snot green, I forget now.

As for the white ones, I plan to wash with sepia and then start drybrushing back up, but not sure what colours to use other than bone white... maybe the one dryB might do it.

Thought and comments please?

King, I saw a great post on another forum about quick 'n easy 1st company bone colours. Using dheneb stone for the base, then literally drowning that in gyphone(sp?) sepia. Let it all dry and drybrush it up with dheneb stone again. It achieved an outstanding bone white look for the figures, but then again not sure how it may look on a tank. I dunno, just a thought.

Also... Wow I don't envy you! Looks like you got a lot of work ahead of you, best of luck! :D

where's the link then to this other forum :D lol

yes there is a lot still grey and just undercoated in my army, but on the other hand there is 4k+ already painted or got some paint on it ;)

my goal is to bring the whole army up to a gaming standard, ie at least three main colours on them. Then over time, and we're talking along time I guess as I have 5 other armies, put detail on them and finish them.

My extension/warhammer room is being built atm... so I'm thinking display cabinets to keep these long term projects free from dust. I might start a log on the Warhammer room also, that could be quite a specticle :)

oh dear, DA painting suspended before its even begun :|

I've decided to take my Daemons to the GT final, so, I'll have to concentrate on getting them painted in the next four weeks, then I can jump back on the DA again...

Damn, yes, I guess your right. Again, there's already quite a bit of work done, so I'll get them out later and photograph them to show my starting point and write down my plans.

Herne, any comments ref the bone white for DW earlier?

Well I hav to admit the quick wash and drybrush method for armour doesn't appeal to me. They make for a quick paint which is great if you've got a lot of painting to do. Ditto with drybrushing generally. Sadly as I get long int tooth as a painter I have gone back more toward layers and blending (both wet and dry.) Makes for better qality painting, but generally takes 5 times as long!!! For my own DA (see Gallery for detail) I have tended to use the following method for bone:

1) Spray black
2) Dheneb stone base coat.
3) wash with a dark wash (I mix dark brown wash with chestnut to get a reddish brown mix)
4) layer over the dried wash with dheneb stone
5) wet blend bleached bone and white into the mix, balancing each plate section with the surrounding ones.

Not the fastest method, but gives a nice drab bone effect: as per my comp entry for the recent competition and this dread and vet:

If speed is an issue though you can follow the drybrush route. My tips is to water the wash slightly so it doesn't leave too many tide marks. Better to do two thinner washes than one thick one or the effect is a little too thick. Drybrushing well relies on a good brush and subtle use of the paint rather than feeling rushed. I usually get too impatient and rush, allowing there to be too much paint on the bristles. - Just my thoughts anyway..... I'll stop rambling now.

yes, it has to be quick, if I don't see 10 models getting lots of paint on them in one session, I get bored and frustrated... god I love my airbrush ;) lol
