Well I have set up an ad hoc painting area after my move and actually done something!
I've just finished 16 guardswomen for my IG conscript squad. You should see these at the meet up.
I'm just starting my zoat officer, then I might take the plunge and start on my heirodule!

cool! :D

im considering getting my Tau back out this afternoon and getting all the "Stealth" models (currently painted white) back on matchsticks etc ready for the next step (several coats of Blue Glaze). im not using them until Wednesday at the earliest, so i should have time to get them all done. :)

im not sure if i am going to have time to get much done on the non-Stealth half of the army - i might have to bring them along to the meetup just undercoated black. will have to see how it goes.

cheers

ive given every model that has a Stealth Field 2 coats of Blue Glaze:

Image

im going to leave them to dry now, and before bed i will give them one more coat. im going to leave them to dry overnight, and then tomorrow im going to give them a drybrush with Skull White, and then a couple of coats of Gloss Varnish. then they are done!

EDIT: 3rd coat done. they might need a little touch up before bed though.

EDIT2: this morning i gave everything a drybrush of white and then touched up the blue glaze (as it dries, gravity pulls it out of certain places, so you have to touch these up and then change the angle the piece is held at while they dry). ive realised that i cant go straight onto the Varnish: i need to do the bases on the Stealth Suits and Spotter first. later this afternoon i will go back over the bases with Chaos Black, then drybrush them Fortress Grey & give the rocks a highlight w/Elf Grey. once that is all done i can then do the varnish. :)

EDIT3: Fortress Grey drybrush now drying - Elf Grey highlights next.
i hope to get as far as doing the first coat of Varnish tonight. :)

EDIT4: all the bases are now finished. after food i will put the guns on all the Drones, and then give everything a coat of Varnish before bed. :D

EDIT5: ive fallen a little behind - we watched a DVD last night (Smoking Aces, which was good), so i didnt get to do the varnish befre bed. ive just done the first coat now instead. ive varnished each model and all the bases, although only the models themselves will get a second coat. might be dry tonight, but will probably leave them until tomorrow. that would still give them 2 days to dry before im using them next.

EDIT6: i have finished the 2nd (final!) coat of varnish. once they are dry (and i am probably going to give them 24 hrs, as they stay sticky for a long time) i will put the Drones on their flying stands, and take a pic of the 2 finished squads(!). this week im going to try to decide on an exact paint scheme for the rest of the force too. it does feel good to at least have half the patrol painted though. :D

more pics when they are finished. :)

cheers

OK, the Stealth Team and Sniper Team are now dry, and i have put all the drones on their flying stands. :D

here are some pics of both finished squads:

Image
Image

the idea was to make them look "ghostly", with an eerie (yet still "sci-fi") glow (representing the Stealth Fields). personally, i feel i have achieved that, and i am happy with the result. 8)

thoughts? comments? :?:

cheers :)

p.s. you can spot the drone i painted as a test piece (back in October last year!) a mile off. if anyone has a spare Gundrone (still on sprue) that they want to sell/trade (maybe bring to the meetup), please drop me a PM. that way i can replace him with one that will fit in a bit better... cheers!
p.p.s. next job is to decide on an exact paint scheme for the other 2 units (FW "Drones" and Gun Drones). i know that it will include white and bright blue (although painted neatly, rather than intentionally "fuzzy" like the Stealthed units), and that the drones on each unit will mirror eachother in terms of paint scheme (for example, one squad's drone bodies might have white rims around blue disks, while the other will have blue rims around white disks).

Looking good Tim! If you have't given them a top coat as yet, just wondering if a coat of gloss varnish might add to the "shimmery stealth field" appearance. Most model get the matte varnish finish to tone down the shine and protect the paint job. Just a thought about using gloss.
The test model, ever thought of just stripping it and then giving it the same paint job as the rest of the squad?
