Flames of War - US 2nd Armoured Company (Cobra)

Postby KInG » Mon Mar 01, 2010 7:58 pm

Having started playing flames of war recently, I decided to collect the US models because of their cheesey special rules... I mean for their cool looking models.... *cough*. Well let's be honest, they did win the war ;) But don't tell TW I said that. In fact, "just don't mention the war" (KMB insert link here to Faulty Towers appropriate sketch).

I've got to get this log up to speed, as I have already done quite a bit with these models. The 1st thing I did was buy the US boxset for my army.

IMAG0937.jpg

IMAG0938.jpg

Then the work started. This boxset comes with an extra two objective markers that you will see later, a weapons summary sheet and an army list that employes all the models in the box to make a 1500 point army.

So let's unpack and start making...

A friend and me have been mulling over starting this game.. Playing it was described to us as "very like Epic" Not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

Actually, it was the war in the Pacific we won alone. :D

In Europe, it was a combination of the US, Brits, Canadians, French, Poles, and various other nations that won the war! 8) But thanks for the accolades!

I think he meant you won _some_ of the war ;)

It's the football (soccer) world cup this summer. If at during a game, it looks like we could do with a hand at half-time, will the US team be there to support us?

I don't know if they will, but I will certainly root for you.
I may not have been much of an athlete in school, but I was always an enthusiastic athletic supporter!
Defeating nazi Germany in WWII was probably one of the most successful team efforts in history!

Flames of War looks like an interesting game system. I wish I had more time and money to invest, looks like a ton of fun!

And in the Pacific, the British Fast carrier force that led the way wasn't useful (having carriers immune to kamikaze's was a big advantage...), and the Australians grinding Japanese to a pulp didn't help the cause, and of course all those Chinese in China and the British/Indian/African army in Burma that kept the bulk of the Imperial Japanese Army busy were of no use what so ever of course...

Oh and Peter Pig are nicer infantry, although I like the FOW tanks.

Well put estarriol, consider me to be reprimanded in full!

Sorry, was thinking more of Pearl Harbor and the island hopping campaign.

Didn't mean to offend, you're quite right of course. That's why it was a world war.

@Matt, no flame war at all. I have never been above admitting when I was in error!

Heeeheee matt, I hate the 'America won the war' almost as much as I hate the 'Britain stood alone' spiel.

that and I feel honour bound to mention the excellent products from a company who advertises its figures having more Oink!

I have nothing against Battlefront, in fact if I did WW2 in 15mm I am sure I would have a fair sprinkling of them, but I chose 20mm and Gods own figures to do it in for my sins.

timewizard, apology honourably accepted.

As I said above I get ratty with anyone claiming to win the war, no matter the nationality, especially as my father served in the Fast Carrier Squadron in the Pacific.

Its nice to see you plan on painting them K!ng
Just remind us again how long you’ve had them for and how long the’ve been undercoated.
TauMaul how many painted units have you got now? Ive got 5 Painted Platoons, Platoons mind not units.

Get your finger out K!ng and I’ll eat these words

Ive gone for a Generic British force as this means i can use them as English, Scotts, Guards, and at a pinch Canadians. There the PBI (poor bl**dy infantry) of the game but I love the variety and the historically accurate (well kind off) units and the way that every game we’ve played has been down to the wire. Its a great game. Thoroughly recommend it.

Yes, I agree Matt. Ok, without further ado...

Well having searched through the images I took while making this boxset up I have discovered a lack of w.i.p. piccies of the model making part. But they low number of parts are probably apparent from these pictures I do have.

First though, don't forget to wash your resin. Washing-up liguid, warm water, soak for approx 30mins and then scrub with a tooth brush or similar:

IMAG0935.jpg

Next we jump to the finished models from the boxset. First up the standard M4A1 Shermans (they had the rounded cast hulls):

IMAG0796.jpg

Then come the larger 76mm gunned M4A1 Shermans (given larger guns to comabt the supperior German's tank amrour) and the light tanks; M5A1 Stuarts (packed with as many machine guns as the larger tanks and very quick):

IMAG0795.jpg

Then we have the infantry and artillery up next. US infantry get no modifiers to hit on the move with standard rifles, they were equipped with automatic weapons, unlike other armies who still used bolt action rifles. The US also had the best communications in the war, making it easier for elements to range in artillery support. All this transplates into the game via their special rules:

IMAG0812.jpg

After adding the filler to cover the rather thick infantry bases on the plastic bases, I then sanded in the normal fashion. I also built up the filler infront of the artillery as though they had dug in a bit. You can also see the two objective markers you get in the boxset in the 1st image.

IMAG0814.jpg

After all models were made it was then time to start colouring them in. Not by numbers though :) more tmw hopefully.
