Grey Knights WIP

Postby Bob_to_Some » Thu Apr 28, 2011 9:38 pm

I thought I would post this here as opposed to the blog, mainly due to ease of getting feedback.

I have had a fairly good size of grey knights for some years now, back when the now old ones were released as deamonhunters.

So my army thus far:

Grand Master - Wants repainting
Librarian - WIP
Brotherhood Champ - WIP
Inquisitor - done

Culexus Assasin - done
Eversor - done
Purifiers x 10 - halberds and 3 x incinerators - Undercoated
+Rhino - Undercoated
Inquisitorial henchmen - mix of minis 10-20 depending on what I field - mixture of painted unpainted minis

6 Terminators with mix of halberds and swords, 1 incinerator and 1 pyscannon- Painted

5 normal Grey knights with halberds and 1 x incinerators - Painted

Storm Raven - Undercoated

Dreadknight - Built, with Halberd and choice of all 3 weapons

Dreadnought - Undercoated

LR Crusader - Undercoated

I will try and tick off as I go and undoubtedly buy more stuff.

Next purchases will be a squad of Paladins and normal strike squad

Currently a WIP but its come a long way.

I had an old epistolery mini, who I went at with my saw, removed the head section and then cut into the termi body.

For his back I used a new plastic termi backpeice, adjusted the sides to fit the older frame, then made him a warding stave. I used Sterns left arm and cut his hand out, fiddly! The demons head is a bit I had lying around for ages, possibly Inquisitor range stuff?

Green stuffed new piping and a robe and here it is. Next stage is to finish the base and possibly add a lightning flash or two.

Started off with the jump pack chaplain, sawed off the justicar left arm for his storm bolter, gave him a force sword, and is now ready for green stuff.

I will put the chapter stuff on him, but keeping it simple.

Then there is my inquisitor and Librarian all together for a size comparison!

Had my first game with them last night:

1500 pts

GKGM (NFS + Pyscannon)

6 GKTM (2 swords, 1 Pyscannon 3 halberds)

10 Purifiers (3 incinerators / 2 Swords / 5 halberds)
Rhino

6 GKSS (1 x incinerator / 5 halberds)

LR Crusader (Hurricane + TL AC)

Storm Raven (Multimelta + TL Plasma C)

Dreadnought (TL LC + Missile L)

I fought his Guard:

Lord commissar + 25 troops
Vet squad + Primaris Psyker
Vendetta (3 x TL LC)

1 Leman russ Vanquisher
1 Leman Russ BT
1 Medusa
1 Armoured Sentinel
1 Leman russ with big plasma cannon thingy (Could shoot 5 plasma cannons a turn!)
3 autocannon hvy wep team.

I won convincingly by turn 4. Game ended Turn five with me having 2 of the 4 objectives and he had nothing left. I managed to make the Dread, LRC and Purifiers scoring and really started ripping his army to bits on turn 2.

I noticed the weakest link was lack of Deamon hammers, and so from now on each squad needs 1 min. Will go back to the models and convert a few tonight!

Other than that the Pyscannons and Dreadnought harrassed tanks, Hammerhand was awesome and honestly the most reliable thing about my force was the vehicles Fortitude! It meant I could ignore pretty much all the poor rolls he was getting against me.

Was an enjoyable game, but I think most of that was because of how well humoured my opponent was.

Making the LRC and Dread scoring is one of those things that needs an FAQ, as technically by RaW doesn't work - the rule states that they become scoring as if Troops, but the rulebook states that vehicles cannot score even if they are Troops choices. If it just said they become scoring then there would be no room for arguing against it, but the "as if they are Troops" qualifier should mean that the restrictions that would apply to Troops units should still apply, and that includes vehicles not able to be scoring. I'm still middle of the road on this.

I must be daft as I do not know what rule you two are referring to. Spack, can you enlighten me on the page and rule so I can review?

EDIT: nevermind i found it

Luckily then that wouldn't have changed the outcome of the game, as I had a strike squad and dreadnought claiming also.

I have not played in over a year so naturally was rusty but my opponent was patient and not at all competitive. Was a very enjoyable experience.

Yeah, a reread of the Grand Strategy:Unyielding Anvil clears it up. There woudl have been a mistake in Bob's game as Grand Strategy only works on a d3 units that are either, infantry, jump infantry, montrous creatures or walkers.

So It clearly makes vehicles(Walkers), ie Dread, scoring by rule which goes against the BRB. The LRC would not have been scoring however.

I really don't see where a FAQ is necessary here as it clearly states walkers. Are there exambles of walker type units that are not vehicles also??

But it's not Unyeilding Anvil that allows it be used on walker, it's Grand Strategy. Spear of Light would work fine with a walker without conflicting with the BRB. As Unyielding Anvil states by RaW that "nominated units can claim objectives as if they were Troops", making walkers equivalents to Troops for claiming objectives doesn't make them scoring as vehicles are explicitly disallowed from being scoring. I think I agree that they should be able to claim them, but as the rule is wording by strict RaW they appear to not be able to.

I managed to get the legs to work how I wanted on the Dreadknight.

Currently have a 750 point painted force, and growing.

I made the dreadknight running, and in the next week or so will work on the arms to hold the sword in two hands!

I have thought of actually using a Halberd in place of the sword, using the same rules in a 'Counts as' scenario.

Whilst fiddling I remodelled the spare DK legs and used them on a Dreadnought (Which will have 2 sets of TL Autocannons!)

Pictures now!!!!!!! :D

My own GKs require a lot of love - I need to start painting them. I've only got a DK and a box of termies from the new kits, but I do have around 50 metal power armoured GK and 11 metal 3rd ed termies + Stern (and can pad them out with 10 RT era GKs, most of which are the ornate originals rather than the more bland later releases), plus a MkIV FW Dread and a MkV FW Dread. They can also commandeer some of my SM/DA Land Raiders (a Mk1, a Mk1 Spartan conversion, Mk3 Godhammer pattern, Mk3 Crusader, and a Mk3 Prometheus) for a bit of mobility too ;)

And heres the Dread knight wip.

Still to create a suitable halberd for him, then will create the right pose. I had an idea for my dreadnought whilst taking these photos and will update when the bits arrive from ebay!

The new leg positions really help the model look like it's in a battle rather than standing in a queue at the post office.

The Halberd edition, still a WIP though as need to straighten it out a little and decide how best to attach the 'servo' arm thingies on his shoulders. The holes are pre drilled for guitar wire also, to replace all the cables I had to 'adjust'
