Imperial Cavalry Detachment

Postby lostandthedamned » Sun Feb 06, 2011 7:00 pm

I have an Imperial Ticket for the Tempus Fugatives Campaign weekend in May and have decided to take a cavalry themed forced (enabled by a special Command sqaud upgrade) that means my 2500pts of Kislevites won't be wasting their existance away in a box.

To complete the force cheaply I have seen the rules for the Tauros and Tauros Venator vehicles from IA 8. £30 each makes little sense compared to Sentinals (around the same points value) but then I found these:
Airfix German Armoured Car

According to the airfix page they measure 76mm x 26mm and with some converting I think I can make 2 units of Tauros for the price of one Forgeworld model.

Thank the Emperor that the event is at Maelstrom Games events bunker rather than WW this time.

I've almost finished converting the first squad of Kislev Rough Riders (out of 6) Pictures to come soon.

The Force (1500pts) ends up as
Command Section w/ every advisor - Cavalry upgrade
5 Units of Rough Riders (one with Morgul Kamir)
1 Unit of Veterans in a Chimera (for the inevitable objective up a building)
2 Tauros Units (1 H.flamer 1 Grenade Launchers)
1 Tauros Venator unit (twin Lascannons)

I'll also have to field a 1000pt spearhead
3 Manticors (Destroyer Spearhead)
Infantry platoon (2 squads +30 conscripts) (Mass Attack spearhead)

Anything left after being hit by 3d3 S10 templates before the game starts should be easy enough to mop up. Especially anyone who sets up a superheavy to avoid the auto penetrating hit

It sure does!

Is the list specifically for the event, or have I missed the command squad rule/lots of rough riders somewhere?

Seconded for pics, sounds like a characterful force.
Would appreciate some of the armoured cars too, especially with something for scale.

Had a look at the kit, it is 1/76th scale which in my opinion will make it too small for 40k. You would be better off looking at 1/48th or 1/35th scale kits to bash

That's a shame.

One thing that might be useful for tauros/venator ...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROBOGEAR-HUNTER-B ... 2eb314507e

These look pretty good.
About £10 isn't too shabby and if you got in touch with the supplier (they come along pretty regularly) you may be able to get a deal re postage for multiples.

I have tons of robogear stuff, the actual models are very good quality (some of the designs are laughable though).
The scale of the pilots/drivers is about 50% too big, though the vehicle will be easily enough to convert.

Thing is i'm having to convert down to an ATV sized vehicle from larger ones. The Armoured car is supposed to carry 4 people 2x2, where as the venator is 2 people one behind the other. I've ordered one to check but also the othe option is the Stug IV 75mm Assault gun which i've also ordered. It will require more conversion work (Remove all but the front shield of the cupola then line insided of gap to create a crew compartment. Replace the gun barrel with whatever weapon and have driver sitting to the left of the gunner. It would keep the nice engine parts as well.

There are a couple of resin alternatives for the FW Tauros and Venator (both are Old Crow).

The Gecko scout (pickup version) - needs 40k weapons added. 4 Wheeler.
Image
The Goanna Scout (three axles, not quite the 10 wheeler the Venator is, but it is close enough). Also needs weapons for 40k.

Clean casts and casting quality is much better than FW - but there are also no spindly resin bits involved and cockpits are fully enclosed and solid.

1/76 are way too small for 40k. Maybe if you played 40k in 20mm they'd be fine. :D

Wouldn't that make it like Warhammer 33.275K?

When I was thinking of adding Tauros scout vehicles to my Guard army, I found some Halo models that I was going to convert; got Valkyrie gunners and pilot models from bits sites, using left over Lascannons and Multi-lasers from my bits collection.

Had a dig around my old models box and found the following which were going to be used as Scout Vehicles when VDR was all the age.

Graham - you can use these as stand-in's for next weeks game.

After much fiddling with Tamiya kits I can't get them to look as I want.
I also considered a cheapskate option by buying jeeps from Poundland, but they never seemed to have something in the correct scale (I will take this route if I ever do Orks though - so many options)

In the end I have turned to paperbuild, and found a great little set of designs on BWC-archive which fit very well.
A couple of hours today gives me:

(guardsman on the back wil be a converted gunner when finished)
Need to go into town tomorrow for some car body filler and more superglue.
Thoughts?
