Keep my lazy self moving log!

Postby timewizard » Fri Jan 27, 2012 12:11 am

Right!
Taking a cue from some other notable folks on AoS, I figured I'd start up a new log to keep my lazy butt in gear!

I have recently acquired an airbrush, figured it was time to move up to another level.

To get the hang of it and practice a bit, I decided to finish up some terrain pieces that have been waiting for some attention. I wanted to do something interesting and unusual with the GW bastions. I didn't want them to be IG colors, and I didn't want them to look abandoned. I wanted a look that said "Here we are on the battlefield, target us if you can!". I've always like the look of the 'dazzle' camo patterns from the last 2 world wars, so I thought I could make that work on the bastions. With a little help, I selected an interesting color palette (I hope). I picked rustoleum red prime, and vallejo airbrush scarlet red, pale grey blue, black and white.

So I started with the rustoleum prime, then masked, then scarlet red, then masking, then pale grey blue. I wanted to see how it was coming so I peeled off the masks to look and here's what I have so far.

And here it is with an ironclad dreadnought in the foreground for scale.

For any interested, that is Brother Merrimack of the Death Dealers who fell in the first battle of the chapter against the dreaded Necrons and was placed in the sarcophagus of honor by the techmarines of the Sons of Talus Chapter. Which is a way of saying that Talus here on AoS painted up the dread for me and shipped it over the waves from the UK, for which I thank him very much! 8)

More to come on the morrow. Cheers!

I've forwarded your praise to Forge Master Godric :)

the camo is turning out just wonderful! when you first suggested it i had two thoughts, first! dear god the mans lost his mind! second! dear god this mans lost his mind!

of course you did link rather extreme examples of it :P

when you add in the metallics, remember to keep them dark, dont want bright shiney gold or silver drawing the eye from the camo on there, not that its humanly possible mind :P

just remember to mask off most of it when you add in the black, unless you put it on by hand, otherwise it could just get messy!

but just think what that thing could do to necron eyes! their heads would pop as soon as they got within range :D

Managed to get the last 2 colors airbrushed onto the bastions.

So now it just needs a bit of a touchup, some weathering, and replace the guns. Well here it is so far.

I'm hoping that the camo scheme is as distracting on the game board as it seems to be on the painting bench. My objective is for it to be eye catching, but just disorienting enough to make units not only near it, but possibly even in front of it, almost disappear or at the least, be difficult to target. Will have to give it a game test to be sure.
C&C as always most welcome.

Wow, that certainly packs a visual punch. I think you achieved the "here I am on the battlefield" concept!

Gadzooks!
Tw, you must have gone raving bunkers!

NMT painted his ig vehicles in that ww1 style dreadnought pattern, so I painted the bonkers on the table the same ... though it has to be said, in somewhat less bold colours.

I like it!

Hey, thanks all!

Now I just have to get the second one done! 8O

@Talus - I'm still a bit undecided on the weathering. Probably some dust and dirt effect around the base, and I want to pick out the shell marks on the bastion to show a bit of 'battle damage' but other than that I'm open to suggestion.

Oh, for any airbrushers out there, make sure the coat of paint you have applied is completely dry and set before you mask over that layer of paint! DAMHIKT!

Nice rainy day today so I should be able to get some more done.

Looking great TW. With weathering they'll be really eyecatching! They'll positively scream 'This is MAH battlefield!' ;-) How r u going to weather? Washed streaks and dusting powders?

I'd like to. I have the materials but lack the expertise. Any pointers you could give would be most welcome.

Best tip i could give would be trial and error. Patience and trial and error. If I were doing them - and this would be just my approach - others might say otherwise - I'd do the following:
1) Mix up a 'dirty wash' I'd use devlan mud, a spot of red and a spot of badab black as the main tone of your scheme is brownish and deserty. Then I'd thin the wash with water and apply to the model liberally around the features and details. A good tip is to let the model dry upside down - that way, as long as you avoid any runs, the shadows will pool on the underside edges of those turret sections. The wash will dry into bullet crevaces etc making them more 3D.

2) I'd mix a thicker wash, perhaps with a touch of black added, that could then be applied with a thinner brush, streaking in long triangles from areas where there are any rivets, edges of shelved or balcony sections etc. Run them down over the pattern underneath, exactly as rain water would run. Keep the layers thin and precise, and build up by letting coats dry until you get a streaky look. if you look at my valkyries in my gallery, you'll see the sort of effect I mean - I'm probs not greatest at describing it.

3) There's lots of ways to use powders, and I'm not great with them unless it's rust, but powders can be applied with a dry brush, gently brushing them into crevaces and along enclosed areas. Often using a neutral tone in the same pallette as the building can work well as long as it is either lighter or darker. Dunno what your table looks like, but the colours reflect dust from rocks etc on your battlefield. If it's sandy then brown/cream is what you are looking for. Obviously powders rub off with hands so if the model is going to be handled a lot, fix it with a spray of varnish, although be aware that this often 'darkens' the powder more and can blow much of it off. (Trial and error U C...)

4) Any sticky out bits of metal can be given a simple rust effect with orangey / rusty paint by making a thin glaze with adding water, then use a fine brush to apply it around rivet heads etc, letting it pool. As it dries the paint will draw in to the rivet and leave a rusty ring around it. A dab of cleaner metal colour over the very tip of the rivet then sets it off nicely.

Just some thoughts - have fun!

@ Herne, thanks for all the tips! They were copied/pasted into a word doc and are hanging in my model shop!

Right, first attempt at doing some blending with an airbrush. I wanted a red/yellow paint scheme for my reavers, and since I had a couple of spare parts, I figured I'd try a test piece or two. So here they are:

im liking the colours!

and i come with a tip for the airbrushing :)

those little spatters (red on the yellow), here's a little something that can help stop it

take a piece of card (preferably with a straight edge!), once the yellow is dry (dont do this wet, it gets messy if you lay the card on top of it >_>) place the card roughly where you want the red to stop, then just move it along when you spray on the red, theory is that it stops the spatter without affecting the line too much

and i suck at explaining things, so let me know if it made even an ounce of sense :D

Not quite as smooth as you'd expect. I've not used an airbrush so I don't know what to suggest. Is the paint consistency wrong?

I don't think so, had the paint and the air pressure setting right I thought.

Have to give it another shot then.
