Markb's DzC (and Friends) Blog

Well after deciding to give GW the push I have taken the plunge and opted for DcZ. I am starting a Plog in an attempt to keep me motivated and actually paint it. This isn't going to be like the Dark Angels plog I started, I am under very strict instructions from she who must be obeyed to actually do something with my new acquisitions!

After initially thinking of going for the UCM I eventually opted for the Scourge, the in your face tactics of them appealed to the old Ork Kult of Speed player in me. To that end I bought the plastic starter set of models from Berger15. I have also been to Waugh Games and got my hands on the Command Cards, a Doomsquid, a blister of Destroyers and a pair of Reavers. These have already been part assembled and undercoated and the turrets of the Hunters and Reapers have been magnetised. I will be going back to Waugh Games on Saturday to order the rest of what I need. This will be the Two Player Starter Set, another pair of Reavers, a blister of Intruder Alphas, a blister of Intruder Betas and a blister of Prowlers. These models will give me over 1500 pts and a reasonably competitive army. I was hoping to get a good few games in on this leave unfortunately the boss phoned me the other day and they need me to go back early, it's a nightmare being indispensable!

The good thing is though I am going to be on a site so I will be able to paint all the models, or at least a vast majority of them. I am going to paint an Invader as a test scheme while I'm at home just to see if the scheme I've got in my head will actually work. I'm looking to try and get it as an organic look, sort of like an internal organ with exposed bones. To that end I'm going to paint the main colour as a maroon/purple with a coat of gloss varnish to make it look gribbly. The ribs are going to be a bone colour, the veins will be blue with the eyes and plasma vents in green.

I will start a UCM army once I've got my 1500 pt Scourge done. I'm looking at painting them in a 3 tone digital grey camo scheme.

On top of this I am going to get two sets of Ruinscape. I am going to use this to make a proper board. I have a lot of plans on what I'm going to do with these. I was going to start work in these this leave unfortunately as my time has been cut short it will be put on hold until next time I'm back. Once I start on these I will put the details of plans up on this plog.

I hope to keep this plog regularly updated, the first one will be photos of my test invader in the next few days when I get it finished. Comments and criticism as always will be welcome.

Sounds good mark, looking forward to seeing how the scourge scheme comes out.

Well got my first Invader done. This is the second one I did, I wasn't to happy with the first one I did. Pit took a bit longer to get my first one done, as I said the first one I did I wasn't that happy with and also as my four week leave has been cut to two weeks real life, not to mention to mention as I am not allowed to drink when I am away trying to cram four weeks worth of alcohol in to two weeks, getting in the way it took me longer than I though.

I am quite happy with the result, as I said I was going for a fresh meat/internal organ look with an exposed rib cage look. I think I achieved this but as always I would appreciate any feed back. The photos aren't the best as I finished it after four pints of Theakstons Old Peculiar and it wasn't in natural light. I might take some better pictures tomorrow. A lot of the highlighting hasn't come out but it gives you a general idea of the look I'm going for.

I like them Mark. I like them quite a lot. THe shiny finish is one you don't see too often in game figures and it works well with the color scheme you"re doing up.
Very nice sir. This is the way the rest of the contest entry is going to look?

Thanks John. Yeah, that's the colour scheme I'll be doing for my army. I'm not sure if that one will make it in, there are a couple of things I'm not happy with, mainly the cock ups I made when I was painting them. Plus I didn't actually finish them off, there is a few detailing things I didn't do, mainly as I wanted get the pictures up before I went back to work. I'm also not overly happy with the gemming on the "eyes", I didn't get the contrast I was looking for. I am happy with the gloss finish though, it gave me the wet, fresh meat look I was after.

You might be getting too over critical with them.

The only person who will notice tiny little off details is probably you!

Now get cracking on the rest of the set!! :)

Yeah, I'm my own worst critic! Nige did accuse me of having OCD when it comes to my painting.

Here's a better photo taken in natural light. Now I've looked at it again in natural light (and sober!) I'm happier with the result. The highlighting actually shows up. While the gloss varnish does achieve the look I want it doesn't lend itself to good photography under artificial lighting.

Image

Interesting point, the highlighting shade I used on the main body is the colour I was originally going to do the army in. Here's a photo of my first test model, bear in mind this one was never finished so doesn't have the bone colours on.

Looks even better in the natural light.

Now I really have to get going and add more highlights to my own feeble attempts at painting the scourge!

That's a disturbing thought, a bunch of drunken Genestealer Cultists on a hen night piling out of it!

The more I look at it the more I think I should have done the grills on the access ramp on the front in bone as well, sort of try and make it look like a gaping mouth full of teeth. Not sure, might have to try it to see what it looks like. Might also make the eyes stand out a bit more as well.
