MJG and WLH painting blitz log

Postby mattjgilbert » Fri Oct 16, 2009 12:25 pm

Jon and I both booked the 5th and 6th November off yesterday to spend some time round my place making headway into the piles of unpainted stuff lying around the place. There is of course no way in hell it'll all get done but off the top of my head, here is my list of stuff I know is sitting waiting for creative input:

Lots of ultramarines in various states of undress (40-50 models)
Daemons (almost there with what I have so far, just blood crushers, the blood thirster and tallyman of nurgle to go until I get some new models)
Necrons (20 warriors, 5 destroyers, scarabs, nightbringer, lord, odds and sods)
High Elves (characters mainly left before I add a couple of new units)
Orcs and Goblins (savage orcs (infantry and boarboys), goblins, orcs, giant, rock lobber, trolls)
Warriors of chaos (just putting the various bits together for this right now so a long way from being ready)
Empire - a friends empire army I'm adding to as it has gaps and he isn't playing so it's round my house. All unpainted.
Terrain, various buildings to be assembled and/or painted. River sections and bridges to build and paint. Craters and barricades to paint.
Space Hulk - no painting done
All the stuff I haven't bought yet..

Paul (with the empire army) is a speed painter and I handed over most of the orcs and goblins and high elves for him to do for me. He uses a wash of mixed varnish/black ink to help the speed painting process. Pretty much like dipping really. I fancy tackling my orc and goblin army and to maintain the look the others have got, I purchased the Army Painter dark tone dip yesterday (black rather than brown).

So the 5th and 6th (and perhaps some time on the weekend too) will see me wading through the greenskins. In the mean time, I'll post pictures of what I intend to get through. I'll also post pics on the days in question to see what lack of progress I make. Perhaps an orc and goblin log should be called an oglog?

I think Jon will be taking on the remainder of his skaven hoard ready for when the new book comes out but I'll let him tell you what he will be attempting to achieve in the time.

Of course... gaming is always a distraction from painting....

Er Blimey - right

Well I certainly have 2 main units of the Skaven to finish off - the Storm-vermin and the Plague Monks!

Also several smaller skirmisher units need to be completed.

Depending when the Rats are released I may also have a doomwheel!

Additionally I will have about 80 Assorted Space Wolves + Transports to get built in order for Paul to Paint.

That will largely complete the apocalysing of my Great Company

Thinks.......

Oh yes and maybe I will get my 9 Chaos interceptors/Fighter-bombers painted for AI as they should be quick and easy.

We shall see

OOoooh - you must paint and show us pic of the doomwheel - that new model looks gorgeous and I'll never have a reason to buy and paint one....

OK here we go.

This is what Paul has painted up for me so far:

And here is what I have yet to paint. I'll get through as much as I can as Paul has lots of his own and other people's stuff to paint (including Jon's wolves).

Image

And that's not all I need either. As a rough guess I want to add:

5 more savage orcs with spears = musician and standard
3-4 more night goblins
15 goblins with shields and hand weapons
1 stone troll
2 river trolls
another squig herder team and replace the missing handler on the one I have
2 goblin wolf chariots
another pump wagon
A unit of savage orcs with extra choppas
snotlings

I should then be able to take pretty much everything in the army book.

More wolf riders might be nice too.

I'll order a couple of those extra bits before the 5th November if I can. I'm off to the GW site to plan which ones to get.

Yeah - but I'd never get to use it - I'm trying to thin down my collection as I have that many models the house is bursting at the seems, and the wife is threatening to make me live in the shed if I buy anymore!

There is something thrilling about looking at a big pile of unopened blisters though - the unspoken potential, the desire to create something huge - (the paper cuts!) I envy you if you do get chance to get it all done though. I just can't seem to speed paint anything anymore.

Until recently I'd never been able to speed paint. I'd try to follow the suggestion of painting 5 models at the same time but I'd end up focusing on one and spending several hours on a single figure. That way lies 20+ years of unpainted armies.

Whoever invented dipping is destined for sainthood.

After doing my bloodletters I have to agree. next time I get to some rank and file troops I'm going to experiment more with it. Currently painting warjacks and scorpion-men so focussing on the old blending and highlighting for them. I've got my eye on some beast men though - they'd better be able to hold their breath......

Picked up two missing command models for a unit of savage orcs on ebay for £1.84 :)

I'll paint this unit up during the blitz.

Some prep work done tonight: got the unit of savage orcs on foot ready (making sure model stuck to bases and all got shields). Also started work on the savage orc boar boyz unit; 4 more to put together tomorrow night (if I can) and a little green stuff work to do (not much though). Also put a couple of goblin heroes together.

Image

oh, and I also won a couple more lots on ebay. Will post pics when they arrive.

Almost done the savage orc boar boyz - just a little green stuff to do tomorrow.

Image

I also found enough bitz lying around to put together a 2nd command group of normal orc boar boyz. This means I can split up the 10 I have now into units of 6 and 7, both with full command.

They look nice, whipped up really fast too.
Strange point (similar to the one I made in baragash's thread..but opposite) from the photos of the boar riders, in the final set ,I can see ..the riders are too close to the mounts head (GW flaw?) e.g. the drummer dude has (from my view of the picture.) his elbows over the drums..meaning his batons would be aiming for the creatures skull when the arm is extended..
Is this just some orky photography or is that the true source of the ork battle cry for authenticity? :D
If what I can see really is true could the drum be mounted over the stupid creatures ears? Earmuffz of ultimat torteyers!! (daft?) Or have them rack mounted in front of him using some spruy wood?(hard wook and possibly also daft?)
Barely even lurking..

The copyright on the boars is GW 1993 so these are the same boars they've been using or 16 years! - yes the riders sit close to the head. I thought about moving the drums over the ears for exactly the reasons you describe but it looked a bit odd (more odd) and they were too high. I opted for the hanging-either-side-off-his-belt approach. To explain how he might actually use them I thought he might hit the one on opposite side (righ hand hits left drum). Does that work?*

Then in that case they look awesome and in no way need shuffling (and as you say the alternatives looked more dodgy) :D

Finally some clear weather and although it's cold out there, I just managed to spray up a whole ton of rats and orcs... 1.25 cans of chaos black spray used up.

One day left in work before 2 days off for painting...yay!
