My Star Wars themed SM army, the 501st - update 25/02/09

For members to post long running threads about projects they are working on

Postby Spack » Fri Aug 22, 2008 9:42 am

It was picks years ago of the 501st at a con that got me tempted to order a vacformed Stormtrooper suit from the states. Alas, I never did get around to it, and I cancelled the order I had for a Master Replicas Darth Vader Lightsaber (only 500 of them made IIRC) and used the money to buy the Chaos Warhound instead.

After my trip to Legoland yesterday I now need to floor my attic and sort out an area to set out all my Lego SW stuff again - I've got all of the sets up to and including the Ep1 releases, and the Star Destroyer is still bagged in it's box (3500 pieces, 3' x 2' x 1.5' when built it'll need it's own room :P) although the other UCS sets Corellian Corvette, TIE Interceptor, and X-Wing used to sit on top of one of my cabinets before I met my wife.

I don't get out much at the moment (looking after a wife who has just had foot surgery - perhaps when she can walk unassisited.) I think I have a photo of me at a convention a few years ago, though.

Like I said, I'm but a humble stormtrooper. I have a trooper's costume in the 'shed' (storage), but I'm working on a more 'mando' style commando suit (which components will be recycled into).

I have the Tie Interceptor on my Credenza at work... I always wanted to get the X-wing also, but could never find it for a reasonable price tag.

I did go to the local Lego store here and they had the Millennium Falcon set, but at $500 I had to pass.

I managed to pick up the X-Wing at TRU locally for about 1/3 off RRP during a sale. I still have my TRU Star Wars Gold Card, and I still get double points on SW toys and they send me money off vouchers including SW stuff regularly, I just haven't bought any for a while. I never did get the Falcon.

Woo, I actually found my old set list on Lugnet: http://guide.lugnet.com/set/mlist.cgi?m=1019

I was also involved in LDraw.org for a while, even helped out on the Lugnet stand at Lego World 2002 in Zwolle, Netherlands.

Hmm, turns out the few photos I have of me in 'uniform' are film prints - shall have to dig my scanner out and scan it.

Have finished the 20 Jet Troopers and a second Landspeeder (Tornado). Now working on the Clone Engineer (Techmarine) with servoharness and two Gun-droids (Gun-servitors) and a Labor droid (Technical servitor). Pics should be up tomorrow.

PS. Nice collection of lego, there Spack. I still have an AT-TE and Gunship to assemble (on hold until I get somewhere to put the finished models).

Here's my newest addition.

Techmarine (clone engineer) with servo harness.

Image Closer view of the Techmarine and plasma cannon servitor. Both servitors used to be Necron pariahs. The Heavy bolter is a metal one from the old devastators, and the plasma cannon uses bits of a Necron Gauss cannon.

Well, how do I put this?

My job is "house hubby", and I'm currently looking after my wife after her ankle surgery. Consequently, I have oodles of time to paint while she's watching her score or so of home reno shows on cable (although assembly of plastic models is done outside as the fumes get to her.).

I've still got to assemble another squad of tacticals, ad then paint them, as well as finish the two scout squads. Then there's the 6 or so Rhinos to finish as well as a couple of predators.

But I'm giving myself a deadline so that I actually get stuff done. My club is having an inter-club challenge (with two other clubs) in October that I hope to get to. I've had the majority of this stuff for over 10 years half-finished.

A small update.

Two more speeders, old-school style. Both with the trifoil wing pattern
Image
and the older RT speeder. The front end was lost years ago, and replaced with a fairing built from two leman russ sponsons.

One of the scout squads with bolters and NVG.

and a closer shot of one showing the nvg.

The NVG heads came from a Mongoose's SST 'pathfinders' miniatures set (you get plastics to make up some MI troopers, with metal bits to make up the scouts, and 8 metal cyber-enhanced k-9 units).

Not much progres done with this in the last couple of months due to the aforementioned wife's foot surgery.

I'll put up some pics in the next week or so (I'm workig on a unit of ARC troopers as my sternguard) - but the weather's turned to crap and I can't get any undercoating done.

I did manage to pick up a grab bag of minis at a garage sale nearby (cost me $30) and included enough parts to make 15 ful cadians, plus 20 vox backpacks, flamers and grenade launchers - and a complete metal 2nd ed IG sentinel and vindicare assassin. I've got the assassin painted up, though.

Still not much more done vis a vis the painting of this army, but i did manage to grab a couple of hours to assemble a Landspeeder Storm for my scouts.

This baby was assembled from a new LS kit. The top and side (rear) panels were cut (basically making the access/stowage hatchways wider).
The pan was also cut up Just forward of the engines.
The floor of the passenger compartment is simply patterned plasticard I had left over (Evergreen sidewalk 10mm grid, I think). The wall is a strip of 1mm sheet (plain). The rest of the workings to hold it together are simply sprue offcuts.

The intakes for the engines were moved to the sides of the engine compartment (only place I could put them, really). The top fin was added to maintain the look of the other skimmers in my SM army.

That's the searchlight on top as the jamming beacon, and an old smoke launcher as the "cerberus" launcher. Pilot got a new acetate windscreen (and is a scout torso/head with marine arms glued to the SM legs).
Gunner is another scout torso (LSS has a BS of 3, so I figured Sc(o)uts man it.).

To fill in the bottom of the passenger compartment, I used a spare back section off a SST Bigfoot Marauder (the one with the big mortar), which gives the stand something to fit into, and heeps the TFR sensor off the ground. I also added a hook on a swing-out beam, to allow for any sling or snatch jobs (no game purpose).

Well, the deck is only 30mm long, so it'll hold two scouts on bases. I'll see about trying to make up some seated scouts (even if I have to sculpt and cast them).

It does, however, fit 5 of the seated sentinel pilots (3 on one side, 2 on the side with the boom) - reminds me, I do have some spare old metal cadian gunner legs (seated). I'll see if I've got any more scout torsos to go with them. Arms may be an issue.
