My Star Wars themed SM army, the 501st - update 25/02/09

For members to post long running threads about projects they are working on

Postby chromedog » Wed Feb 25, 2009 12:33 am

Yay, I can now get back to my log.

I've got thirty or so tacticals assembled, but couldn't undercoat until now due to crappy weather (Either very hot and humid 91% or warm, humid and raining). I'll get to detailing them in the next few weeks.

Here's a group shot Image

The guys in red were my sternguard (just a bunch of old RT SM (all metal) with bolters at the time. They've since been reduced in number and form the command squad. The new plastic SG replaced them.

I have managed to make up a "ForgeFather" Gree-vous out of an old "Iron Father" mini that I had (he will be used as a "counts-as" He'stan if required). He has a halberd as his relic blade and a heavy gauntlet with a built in flamer weapon. He is also cloaked. His flesh is a kind of sickly looking greenish-yellow, and his one organic eye is red.

I have also completed a couple of squads of servitors for him and the other techmarines (I have 11 of them in all, but my Daemonhunter Inquisitor shares them). I've used a dingy grey for the servitor boilersuits, and their augmetic bits are bronzed. Pics will go up in the next week or so - hopefully with some progress shots on the others.

Oh, and we've received some good news with regard to the wife's claim. They've now retracted their previous statement and are prepared to accept responsibility again (in the face or overwhelming proof). Wife is back at work and constantly improving.

Your army is looking very sharp! Sorry to hear about your 91 degree heat wave. Temperature here right now is 10 degrees but the wind chill makes it about 8 below!

Glad to hear the good news about your better half, I know it has been a struggle for you both. Hope the news continues to be positive!

No, it was only 37-38*C ( we stopped using F back in the 1960s) the 91 was the humidity percentage. (on the plus side, this meant no fires up our way). It's just usual summer weather for us.

We get a couple of weeks like that, followed by a couple of weeks of rain, rinse and repeat. Even when it rains, it's still 28*C.

I've been working on some terrain for my club - a river 6' long and about 8" across in the meantime. Got it mostly done today, just needs some final flocking and stuff.

That group shot is a few months old.
Someone asked for a group shot and it was the only one i had to hand due to the lack of good picture taking weather. To prove I haven't been merely slacking off for the last few months, here is the current status.
Image
Image
This pic has the sternguard, Assault marines, terminators.
Image
This pic (Rear) shows my dreads and pods, devastators, Land speeders, bikers and some tanks.

Image
Hiding behind the rear (scratched Landraider - built prior to the 'current' model being released.) is a techmarine and thunderfire cannon. The cannon is built from Robogear parts. The TM is a modified tactical with a big hammer and servo arm. I also made him banded armour. I'll see about getting a better shot of this unit.
Image
This is the forgefather's section plus my command units.
Forgefather Gree-vous, Palpatine and Vater. Behind him are Master of the Forge "Storm" with conversion beamer, a techmarine with full harness and their staff of 11 servitors.
Image
My 'titan' (counts-as Warhound with Turbolaser destructor and Plasma blastgun). Built from a combination of lego and Coko and mega-bloks. It was built last year, but finished in January. There is a Vulcan megabolter arm weapon that I can swap in (on either arm) if needed. It stands a tad under 10 1/2" tall. Joints are posable. The trees are purely to deny LOS through its legs.

That's my 1800x730mm folding table. And my SM army to this point. One Battle company plus attached support assets.

6 x Tactical squads (10 man) each with Rhino.
2 x Devastator squads (10 man) - Rhinos being repaired. Purchased 2nd hand with some damage. 1 'tactical' -bolter guy short.
2 x Assault squads (10 man). Misplaced one trooper.
1 x Company captain with command squad (5) (apothecary, Missile launcher, plasma gun, bolter and Company champion).

1x10 man squad of Sternguard (with Rhino)
2 x 10 man Terminator squads.
1 x 5 man Assault terminator squad.
3 Land Raiders
3 Vindicators
2 Whirlwinds
2 Predators (annihilator pattern with Heavy Bolter sponsons)
5 Dreadnoughts (with drop pods - 5th under construction) including one "Ironclad" pattern.
Land speeders (1x Typhoon, 1x Tornado, 1 x basic model and 1x Storm pattern).
Bike squadron. 8 bikers + 1 Attack bike. Have to find remaining biker in bits box. He's an RT model on bike.
1 x 5 man squadron of scout bikers.
1 Thunderfire cannon (with techmarine).
Chaplain Vater,
Chief Librarian Palpatine
ForgeFather Gree-vous (counts as Vulkan He'stan).
Master of the forge
Techmarines (2)
11x servitors (5 weapon servitors)

The river piece is for my club. It's in 3 sections, each 2' long. Width is a touch over 8". Two pieces have 'fords' modelled onto them (counts as clear terrain for movement), the middle section has a bridge (pegasus techno-bridge) which can be removed if destroyed (mission rules). It's made from 1/2" white polyfoam sheet, 3mm mdf and craft paints (jo Sonja tube acrylics).

We have plenty of hills and trees at the club, but few pieces of other terrain. I thought we needed this one.

Thought I'd post these now as I'm going out of town for a couple of weeks.

Well there is a rule on page 21, last paragraph; "Scenice rocks and other decorative elements that players might have placed on the base of their models are always ignored from the point of view of determining cover (you cannot take your cover with you!)."
Would this apply to an element on a model's base that denies LOS?

by RaW, i think it would (if you dont have LOS then you dont have it, with the only exception being other models in the firing unit not getting in the way). :(
(sadface because of the inconsistency in the rules...)

however, it wouldnt count for the purposes of Cover, so models that are only in cover/out of LOS because of the tree wouldnt count towards wheher the unit as a whole gets a Cover Save. dont forget you only need LOS to 1 model in a unit in order to shoot them all anyway.

now, if you want it to count for Cover purposes too, then you need to hang a banner/loincloth between its legs. ;)
