My Star Wars themed SM army, the 501st - update 25/02/09

Postby chromedog » Sun Aug 17, 2008 9:25 am

OK, I've got a Star Wars themed SM army.

Not the first, I know, and definitely not the best one I've seen, but I wanted to reflect one of my hobbies in another.

Although I've been gluing kits together for over 3 decades, and gaming for over 2 decades, I've also been a Star Wars costumer for the last 8 years, and a proud (?) member of my local 501st chapter. Thus, my SM, are chapter 501, and sport the white and blue colours of their namesakes (the troopers who, alongside 'Darth Vader' storm the Jedi Temple and wipe out the younglings and pompous gasbags.). Yes, I'm aware that these are pretty much the same colours as pre-heresy World Eaters.

These are my latest two tanks. A Land Raider (that can become a helios by swapping some bits), and a Whirlwind (that becomes a razorback after a bits swap with the Raider). The painting and other detailing aren't finished yet (so, yes, I am aware of the mold lines and gaps. That's mostly white primer, there to make it easier to see defects that need fixing).

I'm not short-changing myself with either of these two, as I already have two other Land Raiders in chapter colours, and two whirlwinds/Razorbacks (and ten of the old Rhinos) (not mentioning the preds, vindicators and pods).

This is the "whirly" and Land Raider as standard.

Nice start. I'm a SW fan myself, so I'll be keeping an eye on how you go from here :)

Thanks Spack.

I am working on a full strength fighting company (need to finish up a squad or two of tacticals) that these will be attached to.

I already have my HQ (Chaplain Vater and Librarian Sidious) a single command squad (of the red-detailed Shocktroops), and 4 tactical squads of 501st (the blue detailed clone troopers from ep3), 3 squads of scouts, 2 squads of jet troopers, a few landspeeders and 20 odd tanks (of various kinds).

I'll post pics when I get done with them (I'll try for a unit by unit) and I'll PM for a shift to the logs when that happens.

Here are the current units I'm working on. Thumbnails link direct to the gallery. Thanks to Spack for moving this thread to the project logs.

Jet Troopers (Assault squads). There will be two 10 man squads with both plasma pistols and flamer options. So 24 models all up.
They have the green trim as seen in the SW Battlefront computer games (infantry have the blue). Detailing isn't done yet, this is a start.

Two Rhinos from the company motor pool. I'm having issues with the scaling of the decals, so I freehanded these roundels.

Impressive... Most Impressive..

Joking aside. Great job on these. They look good and the key elements of colors are being used perfectly throughout the entire force.

If we're gonna be playing the appropriate quote game, then:

"Time will tell." or "You'll find I'm full of surprises."

:D

Thanks for the comment.

I find Star Wars quotes to be full of sexual innuendo so I won't use one.

I think you are doing very well.

This post is to put you back on schedule. I'll find new ways to motivate you. If you need more time, you can tell it to the Emperor himself when he arrives. You will find he is not as forgiving as I am. :)

Looking great!

Next up will be my AT-ST pattern dread (las/missile) and the close-quarters Battle oriented ones (often referred to by the troops as the Marine Offensive eXoskeleton, or MOX pattern).

Also, I seem to have misplaced three assault marines - I know i had 20 of them, but I can only find 17 of them. Bugger, will have to build some replacements.

There'll be a "re-inforced" company when I'm done.
2 HQs, a command squad, two dreads, 5 tactical squads, one scout squad, two each of Devastator and Assault squads, 8 rhinos and a Land Raider and Whirlwind.

Look on the roof. In 5th edition they are allowed up there as long as they pass the difficult terrain test.

I went through a partly assembled models pile and found them. Another vet sgt Assault marine and two troopers.

I'll postpone making the extra models. As it now stands, two squads, one with two plasma pistols (+1 vet sgt) and the other with two flamers.

Have finished a T-49 Assault Airspeeder (Typhoon) that had to be rebuilt after encountering the slvering jaws of a Rancor (well, a RottWeiller, anyway. The brother-in-law's), and my Librarian. Pics tomorrow. Damn cold weather is draining the camera batteries.

Aren't they also the core guys from star wars battlefront 2...
The story of the game is quite fun for fluff.. basically after the leia breakout (star wars4)they leave the deathstar in disgrace (how could the elite guard let something like that happen) just before it blows up..so as the elite guard they manage to live the longest of any imperial regiment (restoring their honour and looking to a bright future just before the start of return of the jedi) :D
Barely even lurking..

The 501st are indeed the guys in the story mode of SW:BF2, and are also the group to which I belong (only a humbe stormtrooper, myself, though).
The jet troopers, heavies and engineers will also use the schemes from the game.
The update with pics.

T-49 assault airspeeder (landspeeder Typhoon). This model had to be rebuilt after encountering a rancor (well, my brother-in-law's Rottweiller. It though it would make a nice chew toy - of course, it thinks that bricks make nice chew-toys ...) All I had left was the back section and a fin.

Rather than just use the remains for terrain, I went through my inspiration bucket (lego collection) and picked out shapes that would work. This is the result. The wings are all 1.5mm plasticard.
Image Image Image

My AT-ST pattern dread and "MOX" pattern dread. Unlike other marine chapters, most of the 'dreadnought' suits are piloted by able-bodied marines (well, they are cloned). MOX are used for heavy close-support and are armed with heavy flamers and Heavy gatling blasters (Assault cannons). The AT-STs are the long ranged support suits, armed with Twin laser cannons and a missile launcher.
Image Image Image

and finally, my HQs, Master of Sanctity, Brother Chaplain Vater ("I find your lack of faith ... disturbing ..."), Chief Librarian Palpatine (about to cast "storm of the emperor's wrath" -"Now, my young friend, you ... will ... DIE!"), and who will become the leader of a squad of troopers, a fallen jedi/convert (vet sgt with power weapon).

You really do need to show us a photo if it is a group where you dress up.
