Plague tower!!!

Postby ruffian4 » Wed Feb 25, 2009 6:54 pm

Right, so part of the on-going plague cult project…

I have a bit of an idea, re the next AOS get-together…

Inter club/group rivalry…with a theme???

I have a descent sized death guard army, I have started to make some plague zombie (IG)
Figures that may turn out to be conscripts/lesser daemons.
I managed to lay my plague riddled pestilent digits on some cheapo e-bay chaos marines.

The hive fleet had to give up on his undead marine idea.

Hmmmm……..plague cult!!!!

Ok, so what’s the iconic plague image in 40k?
Plague tower!!!

Image

I went a wandering, ‘round the town, in search of lolly sticks, but to no avail!!!
Not at hobby craft, Iceland, the cheap crap shops…no-where!
But, on my journeys, I did find a cheap (£1.99) garden trellis.
This was as light as a feather and, thought I, would collapse at the very thought of a climbing rose, but who cares? I want a plague tower!!!

After a more fruitful visit to the model shop, I had 150 lolly sticks (£1.50) to add to my garden trellis.

I drew up some ideas, but they looked like the sort of pictures an insane 5 year old would produce…

Main idea, then, would be a box, covered in trellis/lolly pop sticks on rollers.
Note that this is the “skeleton” on which the detail will be added, everything should look much more chaotic and haphazard at the end.

A note on the trellis.
This stuff is really cheap, it has a similar texture to balsa wood, the stuff I got was about 5mm.
It was easy to cut/shape and distress into the type of crappy finish I wanted, though, it hated being cut against the grain in long horizontals and was prone to splitting.
But, being paltry in regard the cost of balsa, it was definitely worth it.
But arseing about with a ton of this stuff, is more than tiresome…

Image

Yeeeeeehaaaaaa!
Loads “o” progress!!!!

Image

That’s better!!!

It's a block of poly, with the wood glued on, a bit boring to do, but it's starting to take shape.

It's less than square, some bits barely fit (half by design and half due to shoddy craftsmanship).

I have a design for the mortar and pus cannon, but have not yet figured out the demolisher cannons.

Also, it's a bit top-heavy and there is a mortar/fighting platform to go on top yet, it may look like one lasgun shot to the side would topple the whole shebang!!!

I like the way you built that pizza too!

Tower is shaping up nicely. If it is too topheavy, you could try filling the bottom with some plaster or hydrocal. If the core is foam, just cut in some large cavities and fill them with the plaster. The extra weight on the bottom should make it a bit more stable on the table.
I believe the last paragraph should provide you with an ample amount of material, both for modeling and for linguistic twisting!

Progress does look good though, looking forward to seeing the next steps.

You could just drip the pizza over it.. and leave it in a warm shed for a month.. then when blue peter come around whip it out and say heres a plague thing I made earlier :)

So does Dolly Parton, but she has no trouble standing up! :D

Since I invented physics a couple of days ago, I might as well put it to some use...

Considering Dolly's perhaps unique centre of gravity, it seems unlikely that she would fall backwards.
Also, with her considerable frontage, I doubt she could fall forwards either!

I think you're right!!!

Re top-heavyness, the angle of the photo's really accentuate it...
I'll take some from a more normal angle tomorrow.

Good progress though, the rollers are on, the cladding is done (but not distressed yet, aka "taking a dremmel to it") and the eyeball cannons (demolishers) are done.
Just the fire points, mortar and maybe a big wheel at the back...???

I'm thinking of calling it "Lhurghi" btw, but it will always be "Dolly dearest" in truth.

You of course made the name an anagram of "girl huh" didn't you? :D

Ok, so I got this bit done next week, so I better get on with it today to make sure I keep up to date.
It may not look that different, but a lot of fiddly annoying stuff is sorted now.

NEW FEATURES INCLUDE…
Rollers!
Fighting platform base!
Smokestack base!

Image

(egg for scale purposes only)

Image

Eyeball cannons!

Image

I’m not entirely sure how I will go about it, but with a bit of luck, these should look like giant hollow eyes leaking pus!

Plan for today is to put on the (larger) front and back rollers, do some scrim tape decking for the back and possibly some drawbridge style access points on the sides.
Even though the rules don’t require them, which reminds me, there are supposed to be some nurgling bolt-holes dotted about.

That looks great ruffian.
Keep the egg for scale at all times ("how far away is that tower??? Oh, I see the egg. Phew")

Actually after a week or so the egg might lend an appropriate aroma to the plague tower. Nice.

I see the face of spack in that pizza

After a month, the egg might appropriatly resemble a giant hollow eye leaking pus!
