Stu's Red Scorpions / Thunderhawk build

Postby _stu_ » Sat Mar 13, 2010 11:28 pm

Right. As a motivational tool, and a handy way of getting some feedback on what I'm upto, I'm planning on posting here fairly regularly with updates to the Red Scorpions Project I mentioned elsewhere. I dont really have a list to work to **yet** as Im coming back to the hobby after a looooong time out (2nd edition epic if I'm completely honest - gooood times).

I'm away from home at the mo, but will post up some b4 pics before the weekend is out. So far I'm looking at the AoBR marines, along with 2 squads of Assault Terminators and the ludicrous plan of scratch building a thunderhawk.

Might take a while, but should have some fun along the way - along with a whole host of questions ;)

Completed
Commander Culln
Assault Sergeant / Captain with JP

In Progress
AoBR Tactical Squad
AoBR SM Captain
AoBR Terminator Squad
Assault Terminator Squad (TH + SS)
Assault Terminator Squad (LC)
AoBR Dreadnought
Thunderhawk Scratch Build
Drop Pod Scratch Build

In the Queue
AoBR Dreadnought
SM Chapter Master with TH
Land Raider - strip rebuild and paint
Land Raider - strip rebuild and paint
AoBR SM Captain
Tactical Squad
Chaplain with JP
10 Man Assault Squad

Good luck on your undertaking stu!
Looking forward to seeing your progress.
I've found this is a good way to get you motivated to work on your project, especially when you see how long it's been since your last post!
I'll be watching!

Good to have someone joining our happy little throng of painters and modellers. I shall watch with interest. ;-)

Hell it seems like its been an age, but with some pretty serious family stuff goin on I havent had much time to dedicate to the project. Ive had a couple of hours tonight tho, so with scalpel and glue in hand, I had a play with some plasticard and ended up with this shell so far. Pic posted with Culln and Dread to give a sense of scale...

Well that's pretty big! Are you matching it to the FW dimensions?

@Matt - it's based on a template that I found online a while back, so not sure how it relates to the current FW model. I mocked up a few sections in paper before starting and really like the scale of it next to the models. It also works quite well with the engines I managed to source on ebay (from the anakin podracer toy, but that's another post further down the line)...

Next job is to find something to use for the internal structure, just to provide an extra bit of strength. It's fairly solid so far, but I'd rather play it safe....

Then I can start on the basic structure of the wings & tail....

Looks good so far - it appears to me to be to the scale of the FW one, having done some work photographing a real one. Cockpit parts are going to be fun for you...

Cheers guys

Have had a bit more time over the weekend while the missus was out shopping for wedding goodies.

After building the main frame, I moved onto creating the tail, main wings and canards out of a couple of thin layers of plasticard wrapped around a thicker layer:

Image

With the tail, I moved on to make a frame to wrap the tail, along with creating the "turret" (for want of a better word) for the main weapon...

ImageImage

From there, I started detailing the main body (including tacking on the canards and forward weapon sponsons). This included the canopy, forward doors and some additional armour:

And after that I spent a while cutting out a couple of aquilas for the side panels. Took a while but I think the end result was worthwhile:

Which brings us up to date, and currently looking something like this:

Next job I think is to look at how the engines are gonna mount. I picked up an Anakins Pod Racer on feebay for a few quid, so that's gonna get the dremel treatment.

Stay tuned..

Long time no update, as Ive been away again on family duties and helping out with the missus' overtime. Had an hour or so last night and planning on doing a few more hours tonight (probably detailing the body rather than hacking the engines with the dremel - still working in the living room with mrs stu watches films)....

Hopefully will post up a few more pics tomorrow (commiting it to the intarwebs here will help massively)...

Really need to get some more painting done too, and get mrs stu back to the painting table....

Keep yer eyes peeled ;)

Not really much to say about these. Rather than tackling any major additions as they'd need me to dremel the engines, i decided to add some detailing to the underside and upper body tail/cannon structure...

Plan for this eve is to continue adding detail to the body / wings
