Wow! Really impressive Dan!

I like the alien, it looks like he's trying to lift up the bookshelf!

Yeah, boxes are like virgins and new cars, after the first time they're opened, no more new!

Had to unseal to check for damage. With collectable action figures MISB isn't always a great idea when buying.

Bio mask has been printed, very happy with the results. There's still a little PLA support material to remove so it's soaking in a solution of caustic soda to dissolve it.

Should be ready to prime tomorrow :)

Edit: almost clean, one more caustic bath should do it.

After cleaning out the last of the PLA I discovered that the hoses inside were too thin and came off, and a couple of the vents were cut in to deep. A little green stuff will hopefully solve it, just need to let it set before priming.

Re: NECA Predators, Iron Man, and more

A few days ago I gave the bio a couple of coats of Halfords red primer (I'd run out of grey), followed by Supadec silver paint. Biggest mistake if this build so far. The Supadec is chrome in a can, literally the shiniest silver I've ever seen from paint. The bio should be a lighter silver, or a darker silver, anything but a mirror!

IMG_20150402_160410633.jpg

The paint also highlighted the facets on the surface and the ridges from the print process, so washing it to tone down the silver would just have made these issues more obvious. After a bit of looking around for solutions I ordered a 20ml tube of Vallejo Plastic Putty, and popped to Halfords for grey primer, fine sandpaper, and some less shiny silver paint in the form of a can of Audi Quartz Grey which looked fairly close to the armour color on the Predator figures

It's taken a few days to arrive, but the Plastic Putty proved itself useful. I first sanded the chrome paint as best I could (note to self, 1500 sandpaper clogs with paint very quickly, try 600 or 800 next time), then smeared plastic putty over all the surfaces that had ridge line and smoothed it. Once dry a quick run down with the sandpaper gave it a nice finish. I also made a new left temple hose connector from Green Stuff that is closer to the one on the Big Red helmet, as the one in the print was almost invisible.

Tomorrow the GS will have set and the bio will be primed, should be able to get the silver on later tomorrow afternoon. For now here's how it looks.

The new silver is far better. Got two coats on today. Still needs lots of work, starting with a shading - going to try some Tamiya clear smoke I've got kicking around. Also needs the lasers and eyes done with brighter silver.

Added some Tamiya Smoke (must resist drinking it, smells like Southern Comfort!) in the recesses and round the eyes, then Mithril Silver for the eyes, lasers, hidhosee connector, and interior vents, along with Tin Bitz around the eyes inside and on the internal hoses.

It looks OK on the figure, although it does stick out a little too far due to the open jaws. From head on it looks fine though.
