NECA Predators, Iron Man, and more

Last year my wife bought me a 1/4 scale Neca masked city hunter Predator 2 figure, which has been standing in the corner of my living room waiting for a more permanent home. Last week she bought me the Big Red figure from Batman: Dead End, and so kicked off the need to rearrange the shelving. I also decided that two Predators wasn't quite enough, so after a bit of digging around found the Elder from Predator 2 at a reasonable price, which arrived on Friday. And so on to moving shelves.

So now we have a problem. There's a space just itching to be filled with another figure. I wanted to get a Predator from the original film, spending the past few days searching for one that wasn't at a ridiculous price. Finally this morning I stumbled on one on eBay from a Dutch (no, not Arnie ;)) seller at closer to original retail price so jumped on it. Now just have to wait for it to arrive, pics to follow hopefully soon.

There will be a new edition soon, assuming that the delivery from China goes without a hitch. It's not another Predator, but it won't look out of place with them. Will post pics as soon as possible.

Please tell me the new addition is an Arnie as Dutch model chewing a fat cigar.

Sorry Angelwing, as good as the Dutch figure looks (yes, they do one in the same scale and is a perfect likeness of Arnie), the new companion is an Alien :)

I want an Alien! Where did you get it from Dan?

When I was a kid my best mate got one of the original Alien figures ( it had working jaws and luminous head with a cover over it) that were banned just after release.

Hunter, I thought you'd sold that ages ago. Nice to see you still have it.

Gav, got mine from an eBay seller in China. Cheaper than from any UK seller I could find, and put "gift" on the customs notice so no VAT or import duty either. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201214577695 . The jaws close, the inner mouth is retractable, and the figure is jointed at the ankles, knees, hips, waist, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and neck.

That is really sweet.

No the Head has never shifted. King was interested once apon a time. But Meh. Lives in my front room. May re-paint it. Nothing to paint at present. :)

Latest news on the Predators front - the company I work for recently bought a Stratasys Fortus 250mc production grade 3D printer which has a resolution down to 0.178mm, and I've put together a 1/4 scale human skull (without the lower jaw) and spine ready to print out for one of my 1/4 scale Predators to clutch (original full skeleton model found online, needed a lot of tidying up and editing to strip it down to just the required parts and fix a lot of inverted faces and unclosed surfaces). The printing software estimates it'll take about 6 and a half hours to print, total material cost about £10. :D

Also working on a 1/4 scale bio mask to fit the "classic" Predator, and aiming to get it to fit even though he has a slightly open mouth, so the figure can be displayed with mask in place, by his feet, or have him in the middle of removing his mask as his hands are just right for that pose. Most of the mask is done, based on a 3D model I found online, but the inner surface needs some work to fit around the jaws and the outer details need adjusting to more closely match the proportions of the mask used in the first movie.

And the printing begins.

8:53am. Initial white support material is laid down, this is soluble so makes it easy to remove the printed part from the plastic base.

IMG_20141209_085331882.jpg

11:11am. Layers are built up in black ABS, the printer was already loaded with black for another job - the small rectangular part nearest the camera - and as the final part was to be painted the colour of the plastic used wasn't important.

12:35pm. An hour later and the parts are slowly growing. Only 3 more hours left to go. The white material supports the ABS and helps it keep it's shape as it sets.

IMG_20141209_123533910.jpg

1:53pm. Spine almost complete. Still plenty to do on the skull.

IMG_20141209_135320969.jpg

2:40pm. Skull almost there, eye sockets compete and just a small amount to finish off.

IMG_20141209_144003527.jpg

3:21pm. Printing finished, next step is to remove the parts from the base plate and place them in the tank to dissolve the support material. Will leave in overnight as checking at 4pm there was still a lot of support plastic in the eye sockets.

Will post pics tomorrow if the cleaned parts :)
