Boba Fett Return of the Jedi Helmet - Rubies Repaint

Boba Fett Return of the Jedi Helmet - Rubies Repaint

Postby Spack » Sun Nov 12, 2017 4:22 pm

I recently picked up a Rubies Collectors Boba Fett helmet with the intention of repainting it as a Return of the Jedi version. The Collectors helmet is not very accurate, being thin plastic vacformed pieces glued to a polystyrene core, but it'll do as a placeholder until I can get something better.

I found some templates online, and decided to simplify it as I wasn't going for screen accurate with a cheap helmet. I already had a few spray paints I could use, so just needed to get some Humbrol Dark Green 30 for the main colour, and a Burgundy for the visor.

First step was to dismantle the helmet by peeling the plastic pieces of the styrene. Only a few blobs of hot glue had been used so it came apart pretty easily, and the surface of each plastic part was rubbed with wire wool to prepare for primer, and the clear part of the visor covered with masking tape.

All of the parts were given a few coats of Halfords grey primer for plastic, and then a couple of coats of silver.

The next step was to use Maskol to cover the areas that would remain silver, and then everything got a couple of coats of grey. The Maskol was removed once the paint was dry, then left for a few days.

Maskol was reapplied to the silver areas, and to areas where the get needed to be left visible. A darker grey green was added in areas where it would be visible after the green coats, and again the Maskol removed.

After another application of Maskol, the first coats of green were applied to each part. Humbrol Dark Green 30 on the done and bottom of the cheeks, and Racing Green on the back.

After these were dry, the back and face were remarked. The upper cheeks were given coats of black with green misted in, and the back recesses painted grey.

Once these had dried the visor was given coats of burgundy, and the done was masked up for the 18 orange killstripes.

All of the parts were given coats of Matt spray clear varnish, and the visor was coated on the inside with some dark smoke headlight wrap. The range finder stalk was replaced with a longer part made from wood. A Borden connector was made from a small piece of plastic tube and some filler, and the red bits on the back from small plastic tubes painted red.

All of the parts were hot glued onto the styrene core.

Nice.

I have a fett helmet that I got off a mate (who has a copy of the original mould made by the bloke who did the helmets).
I need to rebuild the rangefinder bit. Also repainting it to be more jango coloured.
Image

Also have a full stormtrooper set of screen used armour (made up of pieces from 5 sets) and a new bucket - but the armour has to be adjusted because I'm now a little fat to be a stormtrooper. Ironically, it doesn't meet 501st regs for "acceptable" even if it WAS screen used.
That is not dead which can eternal lie

and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die

Damn Chromedog, sounds like your have a nice collection. I wouldn't mind a full set of TK armour but I'm also probably a little "large" to get into it ...

Excellent repaint. Have you worn it, pointed at the kids and gone pew pew pew?
