Doopydoos Resin Stormtrooper E-11 Blaster Kit Build

Doopydoos Resin Stormtrooper E-11 Blaster Kit Build

Postby Spack » Thu Jun 11, 2015 9:43 pm

After having recently built a full size Stormtrooper helmet kit, I managed to order a resin replica blaster kit from Doopydoos. The kit arrived this evening, the last 3 weeks since I ordered it seem to have taken ages to go by. The barrel of the kit is resin cast around a PVC pipe with an inner diameter about 22mm, and comes with since of the holes already drilled out as well as the slot for the bolt and charging handle.

So far all I've done us checked all the parts were in the box, clean up the flash on a few parts (trigger, trigger guard, curved parts) and filed and sanded a few areas where the mould had blobs.

I've already got a piece of aluminium 1m x 20mm x 2mm) for the scope rail, and should be able to use a sliver for the front sight. I've also got some 6mm hex bolts for the muzzle. I've also got lots of odd screws and bolts in my tool shed so should have enough to replace all the screws visible in the resin. And finally I've got a 8x20 cheap monocular on the way from China which has lenses which should be just the right size for the scope.

Hopefully will get most of the drilling and sanding done this weekend.

All the parts as they arrived in the box.

Parts roughly cleaned up and main parts placed to check overall look is right.

Nah, only came in the post from Cleethorpes :)

Going to be interesting to see how long my full Stormtrooper outfit takes to arrive from Japan ;)

Before putting the kit together I wanted to see if i could build a working folding stock. I picked up some PVC trim from B&Q and started cutting and shaping it. To make the main part two L shaped pieces were cut so that when glued two faces make up the top surface that will be drilled with holes, and about half way along one face was cut away to make the arms. The bends were made by using a hair dryer to heat up the PVC and shape it. A second layer of PVC was added later to thicken and reinforce it. I also made a start on the end piece, although it'll need a lot more work and shaping.

Today I received the monocular I'd ordered from China for £2.25, to dismantle to use the lenses for the resin scope. It contains one 21mm lens, and two 11mm. I'll only need the large and one if the small ones. The scope won't be functional, but the glass lenses week make it look more realistic.

Drilled the small end first, using a 10mm wood but initially, then a small sanding bit with a Dremel to get it to 11mm. A 10mm HSS bit was then used to drill it deeper, which removed the small recess left by the wood bit and provided a small step for the lens to fit flush against so it wouldn't push to far in.

The large lens was done in a similar way, although being larger I first used a 22mm wood bit, then 16mm wood bit, and finally a 10mm normal bit. A Dremel sanding drum was then used to bevel the step between the 22mm and 16mm. The lens sits on the edge of this bevel, and fits flush to where the cast lens was.

Think I've finally got so the pieces together for my mods on this kit. I s short 2 tiny brass screws for the front of the scope, had a moment of inspiration tonight and find an old mains plug and the little screws in that are perfect. Tomorrow I'll get all the cast screws taken off and drilled out ready for the real screws to be added.

IMG_20150616_201701547.jpg

A little detailing to the magazine, and making a scope rail and bracket from the aluminium strip I bought last week, and it should be ready to start pinning and gluing together. Then it's time for painting. I'm going to fit it with the single piece folded resin stock for now, and then continue to try and make a working stock later - after I've run around like an excited child squealing "Pew Pew", with my helmet on of course :)

Got more done today. Drilled out the cast screw heads and replaced with real ones. Cut out the recess in the stock, drilled and fitted mounting bolts. Drilled SK the holes on the bottom of the barrel for when the stock is open. Replaced the cast grub screw on the magazine receiver.

Still lots to do, but it's beginning to come together.

Been clearing the garage this weekend so not much progress. I d get a rough spring made from an old coat hanger, and a bolt from some PVC conduit and wood dowel.

IMG_20150621_143438156.jpg

The conduit is 20mm, but the core of the blaster is 21mm so to make sure it doesn't rattle the outer part was cut lengthways and two shorter pieces inserted to make it slightly larger. The handle attaches to the dowel using a screw with the head cut off.

Slowly working on this, today managed to work on the grip. The free/lock cast screw head was removed along with the blob for the domed nut on the opposite side, and real brass screw and nut inserted. The trigger was drilled and a 1mm diameter piece of carbon fibre rod holds it in place, and a small spring on the back allows to spring back after pulling. The A R S selector switch was drilled to add a headless nail in the back, and fits into a matching hole in the side of the grip. Finally the blob in the bottom was replaced with an M5 hex socket bolt.

I also found an old wind chime in a drawer with metal tubes that will fit nicely inside the barrel, just need to add soever rings around the end of one of then so it lies centrally in the outer casing. I'll probably get that fitted over the weekend, and if I get time will pin and glue the rear sight so I can measure and cut the scope rail.

Still working on the little details. Drilled and routed the sight, and cut a metal sight pin from a screw.

IMG_20150628_142613991.jpg

Cut a scope rail from 20mm x 2mm aluminium, bent to fit into the top hole on the barrel and screwed into the rear sight. Most of the gun goes together now without any glue yet, just screws and pins.

IMG_20150628_160507301.jpg

Now the rail is complete I can get the scope finished and mounted, and make a bracket for the counter. Still waiting on a piece of perspex for the counter screen, the company I ordered from sent a bottle of glue instead :(

Scope rail has been cut from aluminium strip, and a small steel bracket cut to hold the counter. Still plenty to do, but I'm pleased with it so far.

On the recommendation of a member of the FISD I've made a new bracket which moves the counter about 15mm forward so it's back edge lives up with the back of the rear scope mount. It's also more rigid as it's a T shape so is held in place by both scope screws.

IMG_20150702_193718074.jpg

Received the piece of perspex today to cut down to fit on the counter, so now I can work on shaping and sanding it. That's the lay major modification to do, a then I can start gluing it together :)

Got lots of little bits done today, and painted a few parts. Need to get side brass paint before I can finish the scope.

Used green stuff to add the bolt strip to the ejector port, the cast one was to high and to thick. A strip was added roughly and then cut straight with a scalpel, hopefully it's in the right place and will look OK when painted.

Will get more painted and built later this week.

First part has been painted :) The scope had a base coat of brass spray, and then the 5 tiny screw heads in the body were masked with little blobs of blutac, some cotton thread wrapped around the join line round the front section, and the base of the feet with tape, so they would all remain brass after the black top coat. Once the black was dry (I used matt so it looks a little flat, but the clear coat will fix that) a tiny amount of Skull White paint was rubbed into the lettering on the scope, and then for weathering a few areas were gently rubbed with fine sandpaper to reveal the brass undercoat.

IMG_20150707_053241126.jpg

The scope has now been a coat of satin clear coat to seal and protect it. Once it's dry I can put the front screws and glass lenses in which will finish it off. Just need to get the rest of the blaster built and painted now.

EDIT: put the screws and lenses in, I think u can call this score finished.
