Star Wars Merr Sonn Power 5 Blaster Replica

Star Wars Merr Sonn Power 5 Blaster Replica

Postby Spack » Thu Feb 15, 2018 5:59 pm

I've been looking at making a Merr Sonn Power 5 replica to go with my TIE pilot helmet on display for a while, but finding 3D models of the parts has proved nigh on impossible. There are parts on Shapeways but they come in at just over £100, and would still need a Mauser C96 replica to fit them to. I stumbled on Buckethead Props on YouTube a few weeks ago, and then found his Etsy store where he was selling the lasts few "B" grade resin casts of his Merr Sonn based on a Denix C96, less than half the price of just the conversion parts. I managed to grab one of them just before they sold out.

When the blaster arrived I found that there were a few small bubbles on the top around the received, the T track vertical piece was just a thin shell, and the top of the flash hider had a large bubble under the top surface. But as this was a cheap "B" grade cast I knew there was going to be work involved, so this wasn't an issue, and the rest of the cast was nice and clean. Armed with some black Milliput and some black 2mm ABS strips I set to work preparing it.

First up was removing the top of the T track and using a Dremel routing bit to cut a groove that I could then glue some ABS strips into to create a new vertical piece. then the flash hider bubble was removed, and roughly filled with Milliput. All the other little bubbles were also filled.

After leaving the Milliput to set for a few days, it was sanded smooth and then the flash hider had new holes drilled. While I was at it I redrilled all of the other holes to be much deeper.

All of the other filled bubbles were sanded smooth, and the whole blaster and other resin parts rubbed with fine wire wool and then washed thoroughly to remove any mould release. It will be left to dry before painting and gluing on the small parts.

lovely stuff, and can see all the effort you have put into it :)
if you are interested in getting stuff 3D printed i can recommend 3Dhubs, think of it like a hungry house for 3d printing :)
lots of options and prices and cheaper then shapeways i have found.

I've already tried 3D Hubs, will be fine for very small pieces. Problem is needing to have the STL files, I couldn't find any for this blaster that were even close to accurate or complete with all of the parts.

I've got a friend at work with an Ultimaker 2 who can run stuff of for me cheaper than 3D Hubs too :)

Getting nearer to finishing this. Today I've trimmed and glued the greeblies to the top of the barrel, and given the whole blaster a coat of satin black.

Once this first coat of paint has dried the flash hider and some details will get a coat of silver, the grips a coat of brown, and screw head details a little silver or brass depending on their position.

The first coat of paint dried a lot quicker than I'd expected, so I got to work on the details.

The flash hider got a coat of Superdec silver, it gives a pretty good aluminium looking finish that would be washed with black to tone it down later.

The grips got a coat of brown paint, the screw heads a little brass, and the discs some silver. Silver was also used to dry brush most of the black to make it look a little more like metal. Finally the flash hider got a coat of black which was then wiped off.

One this is all dry I'll give it a coat of matt clear, and them glue on the coiled wire from the mid sight to the hammer.

UPDATE: I decided I didn't like the grips as they looked a little too orangey, so I have them a coat of a darker brown which I'm much happier with.

I'm calling this done. Matt clear coat came out nicely, and the coiled wire has been added to the mid sight, glued into a hole drilled into the back of the receiver.

Slowly crossing off the list of Imperial weapons from the original Star Wars movies. I have a good idea about what I want to add next, nice and small so will be easy to add to the shelves. It's the big ones I'm worried about, where am I going to squeeze in an MG-34, MG-15, or Lewis gun conversion?
