Stormtrooper SE-14R Blaster Replica 3D Print

Stormtrooper SE-14R Blaster Replica 3D Print

Postby Spack » Mon May 08, 2017 7:44 pm

For a while I've been wanting to add a Stormtrooper SE-14R light repeating blaster pistol replica to my collection, but most of the resin cast kits on eBay looked rough and the only decent cast is quite expensive. The original pistol was based on a cut down Rexim Favor with the addition of knurled pieces on the front as rear of the receiver, and a scope mounted backwards.

While this was never seen in the original movies and was only on some promo photos, the blaster did appear in some Star Wars video games, and more recently in the Rogue One movie carried as a sidearm by Death Troopers and used by K-2SO near the end of the film when holding off the Stormtroopers at the data storage entrance.

Just after Christmas I found a 3D model on Thingiverse that looked pretty well detailed, including a separate bolt that moves inside the receiver and hollow grips so that the trigger could be set up to move. A colleague at work had an Ultimaker 2 printer at home and offered to print the parts for me, and last week I got all of the parts together to build.

The kit didn't include a scope but I got a cheap 4x20 rifle scope on eBay that fit perfectly.

During the build up found a few problems with the parts: the bolt is wider at the front end than the back and didn't fit inside the receiver without sanding down, the bolt is too long so it only moves about 20mm, and the trigger couldn't be fitted so that it moved due to the design of the trigger frame section. Also the scope mount and front sight were stuck on thick base piece so this was removed and the two pieces attached to the receiver directly.

The original Stormtrooper promo photos from the late 70s that show pistol have a dust cover over the bolt slot and the ejection port but this kit doesn't include this feature.

The parts were glued together with PVC Weld glue, and gaps filled with Isopon P38 and Humbrol Model Filler.

Once the glue and fillers had set the receiver and built were sanded, and all parts given a coat of plastic primer, followed by 3 coats of satin black, and 2 coats of clear lacquer. The receiver and mag then had a final coat of satin black to revive the gloss look, and the bolt had some chrome buffing powder added.

I'm pleased with the result, and it will be added to my display one I make a stand for it. I might also get a soft spring that will fit behind the bolt, and cut the bolt down to the correct size so that it can be pulled back to clear the ejection port completely.

I might have to have a go at this at some point... I'd love to have a light sabre and blaster pistol on display. I'm just not sure how faithful I could be and if it'd be acceptable to wing it, lol.

If you get an existing 3d model to print that is pretty accurate then it's only glue and paint to make it look realistic, no different than a large 40k model :)

There are some nice saber hilts model kicking around on Thingiverse including interior details that are visible when you pull it apart.

Printing is the harder part - if you don't have a printer, and don't know someone who has one, printing companies like Shapeways will either be expensive or refuse to print it; eg Shapeways won't print any parts that are replicas of an actual weapon, so the blasters will be a problem.

When I looked around at options for printing the 1/6 scale Emperor's throne the material cost wasn't much, but the time taken to print due to the size are where the costs are; Shapeways quoted £1200, using the industrial printer at work would have cost me about £200, but a friend at work with an Ultimaker at home only charged me £10 which covered the ABS filament that he used as his printer wasn't doing anything else and he was happy to use it as a test print.

Cool, good to know. I'm a little tempted to get the parts list from the Original lightsabre and go from there with it.... but I'd have to cost it out to see it'll be viable.
