Blogs

Postby Spack » Mon Mar 14, 2011 5:00 pm

I've added a Blog system to the site. It's still in testing at the moment, and I haven't got the side bars working yet, but feel free to post stuff to test it out and let me know if there are any issues. Only registered users can set up a blog - go to My Blog at the upper right next to Logout, and then post a blog entry to start your blog :)

If you go to Control Panel at the left under your name, and then the Blog tab, you can adjust some of the blog settings such as the default page shown on your own blog, and it's name.

The option to set the blog title isn't working atm, looking at it now.

EDIT: fixed it, and have now enabled the left menu on the blog pages. I'll leave the right panel off for now as it's a bit narrow with them both turned on.

I see a couple of you have decided to start using the blogs, so next step is for you to tell me what you want added. For a start, how about categories? Let me know what you want adding, and I can add them. I'll put a few general ones in first, but let me know if you want any others adding to the list.

Is there a benchmark? could you point to an easy to view blog thing where we can say.. liked A, never use B,C,D hate E, would kill first born to be able to F? etc

Could we have a box on the forum web page listing most recent blog activity..
How do are we *meant* to browse them? I go to "my blog, then up the tree (top left file listing) to blogs and from there look at the peeps posting stuff.
Basically what is A BLOG? :)

Also posting has been slow over the last 2 day anything to do with this?
Can external users subrscribe to them?

Without trying to sound negative (I'm not)... what's the reason for having a blog on the site? What are you anticipating people would use it for?

I thought that when the one linked in my sig started a few months back, but I kinda prefer it for general jabber that doesn't really merit a topic and/or doesn't really have anywhere to go.

The idea of having a blog is that each user has their own place to post things that don't really warrant a forum discussion. It's much easier to locate things by date in there too, and each user can adjust the permissions for guests/members to see their own blogs (although I haven't fully tested that part yet so don't go posting private stuff just yet!).

For instance, you want to start a project log. By the time it gets to page 3 it's getting very unwieldy and difficult to follow because there are lots of comments inserted between posts updating the project, but in a blog you would post a new blog entry for each update and the comments are tacked on at the bottom - much easier to follow as you can see the updates immediately, it has RSS/Atom support and you can subscribe to blogs you like to receive updates (as you can choose to only get updates when a new blog entry is posted rather than for every comment added as it would in the forums), and it's also easier to follow particular member's posts rather than having to hop around different forums/topics.

Baragash, no this would not slow down posting - it doesn't impact the forum code. Yes, external users can see them and can subscribe, with guests they can see them too but I'm not sure about the subscription, I'll have to test that with another browser instance when I've finished tinkering with the layouts.

As to features and changes, I've got nothing to compare to. I'm also limited by what the mod currently has available, I can tweak bits of it but would rather not go with a major rewrite. I've put a Blogs link in the main header (replaced Events as Nige hasn't been keeping it up to date and it was empty!), as well as at the left side nav. Recent blog entries are also now on the AoS home page too - I know a lot of you bookmark the forum home page rather than the main home page, and if you want I can add a recent blogs bit on there too but it's already quite cluttered.

So the project log section of the site becomes redundant?

How do you "find" new blogs or projects people have started? Do you start a new blog for each project?

Oops, that's what I get for skimming and posting while trying to man the bookstore here at DevWeek :P

It's up to each user how they use their blog, but personally I'd post a new blog entry (equivalent to starting a new forum topic) for every post that has new information in it. Use tags to link blog posts together (for instance, if you're creating a new Grey Knights army, post a blog and tag it Grey Knights, post another and tag it Grey Knights, and it's easy to pull them both up by clicking on the tag in the right hand menu). Then post comments as replies to other members comments, but don't use comments to post blog updates as otherwise you might as well use a forum.

The Project Logs forum is still useful - I only put that in as a suggestion of where a blog might be more appropriate. A project where multiple users are contributing would fit a forum post better than a blog, for instance. Or you could use the forum to discuss ideas, but then post actual project updates in the blog.

At the end of the day both the forums and the blogs both have pros and cons depending on the content being posted.

How are you trying to post them? You can either post in the gallery and then use one of the BBCode URLs on the gallery photo page (I normally use the TMBL one), or use the Upload Attachments tab in the blog post form; remember to upload each attachment in turn before posting the blog.
