Change of logo for 2007?

Postby Spack » Sat Dec 30, 2006 6:20 pm

I've been messing with Photoshop over the past few hours, and did some experimenting with rust effects. I thought it might be fun to have a new logo for 2007, so here's what I've come up with so far (if anyone else wants to design a logo, feel free and post it for everyone to post comments on, I might even run a competition :P).

So, any comments? Feel free to complete the poll too :)

It would be easy enough to adjust fonts in any of the above, or mix elements from each of them - I'm not a designer, so I'm relying on you lot to give me some pointers :P

I think that all the type faces are good in their own right, but perhaps inkeeping with the background of 40k, perhaps something a bit more gothic. Something more imperialistic!

Perhaps you could try and match lettering with some of the stuff in the 40k rulebook!

Look carefully at the exist logo - it uses Caslon Antique, which is the 40k font. I thought I'd try something different this time :P

OK, I added another choice - logo 4 uses the same font as the current logo (Caslon Antique, the font used for headings in the 40k rulebook), but instead of being embossed it uses a rust effect. I've adjusted the poll to take this one into account too. Please feel free to leave comments. If someone who has already cast a vote wishes to change it please let me know and I'll adjust it.

i voted Logo #2, too. asked Kate which she preferred, and she chose #2 as well, so it passes the "wife test". ;)

p.s. is it just me or does #2 look like the Mythbusters logo?

I myself voted #4, although I'l admit it was because I was particularly happy with the rust effect on that one - I was proud of getting the dark edging to the rust areas themselves - although I'm not sure I like the shiny letters, the dulled look of #2 works better. My wife voted for #2, and my brother-in-law for #3. #1 was my first attempt, and I wasn't happy with the almost unnoticeable rust effect or the font - it was a bit of a test that I'd thought I'd slap up for the hell of it.

I might try mocking up another copy of #2 with the Caslon Antique font to see how it looks, but I think the narrower letters won't look as good with the rusted edges - I'll see if I can fatten the letters up a bit first.

As to the Mythbusters similarity, I can't see it myself - their logo has a rust effect behind the lettering, while mine has rust on the letters themselves :P

i prefered the font in #4, but its too dark (the tops and bottoms of the letters blend in with the background of the screen... although my monitor is too dark and needs replacing, so its probably just that).

Tim, with a little bit of tweaking and adding some effects, I came up with this:

Image

This has the Caslon Antique font, but has had the letters thickened up a little, and adds a little outer glow to outline the letters.

rathe than the "outer glow", could we get a bit of background (a bit like #3 but not so clean) in a lighter colour? maybe a metal plate, as if its written on a section of bulkhead/vehicle hull?

yes, thats it - all it needs is a bigger border on the right hand end (to match the space on the left) and it'll be perfect. 8)

just my opinion ofcourse - what does everyone else think?

I do need to shift that background - it was only done in a hurry, had to turn the PC off as my son wouldn't go to sleep with me working on it. I'll tweak it again tonight, and maybe even look at doing a scratched/dented paint and metal effect on the background.

I like logo 3 because it really stands out. Logo 4 would look awesome on a slightly lighter background......maybe a lighter blue/green background?
