DST

Postby jlong05 » Mon May 12, 2008 11:25 pm

We need either an Arizona option that is -7 hours from GMT with DST off, or an option to select no DST. I have to switch my time whenever DST changes.

I would be happy with some way of knowing what time it is currently at GMT. Then I could at least select the right option.

It tends to take me a couple of tries before I get the right option. It didn't help when it changed for DST here, and then later changed for GMT too. I didn't even know they did it in the UK.

I'll look into it - at the moment the site is adjusting itself to use UK DST. Right now for GMT take 1 hour off the server times being shown, our DST runs from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.

Yeah its weird too, cause the US isn't running DST the same time the UK is. I only remember this as my company was working on the UK conversion an I remember our Change Management process having to be aware of e DST differences. I can change manually if I have to, but a selectable option would be great.

I've adjusted the DST system on the site, and I'm testing now. If you go to the Profile link in the forum menu near the top there is a new option "Are you in a daylight savings timezone". It's preset to Yes to make the switch smooth, if you set it to No it'll remove the DST 1 hour addition.

I've just tested it and this post has a time of 7:03 UK time (with DST). I went to my profile and set DST to No, and now it shows up as 6:03 (which is GMT). Can you test it, and see if it works ok for you now - it should use your timezone setting to determine the hour offset from GMT, and then the DST yes/no flag to determine if an additional 1 hour is required.

The DST addition is based on the server timezone though, so on the last Sunday in October it'll automatically switch off - this means users can leave the DST option on, and it'll adjust automatically as required although users outside the UK may have odd times for a week or so due to the differences around the World. This is the best I can manage without a massive overhaul of the forum timezone handling code - it never had DST built in, and it's now got a mod installed to handle it rather than the simple one line code adjustment I was using before.

Well I have switched me back to GMT-7 with DST off. It is currently 7:37am local AZ time.

EDIT: Checked the Time-stamp on the post and it matches close enough for me. Thank you very much for putting in this fix. At least for 50 of the 52 weeks each year my time will always be correct.

The time should, at the moment anyhow, be no more than 1 minute out as the clock on the server is only around 30 secs astray from current UTC time according to NIST.

I didn't realise that there were areas of the World that didn't use DST. I now know that some only offset by 30 minutes, but I don't think we've got any members in those timezones :P

Yeah. Working in the credit industry I am very aware of the time zones. ;) There are a few 30 minute offsets. Although I am not sure there are many non DST locations like AZ. I think the other US areas that were are not doing it.
