IMPORTANT: Private Message notification settings update

Postby Spack » Tue May 20, 2008 11:45 am

I've made a change to the PM notifications settings so that all new accounts have the notify by email and notify with popup turned on by default. It's too easy to miss PMs without either one of these on, and they can be turned off if required. However, I'm also considering updating all existing users on the site to have those settings turned on as there are a lot of unread PMs in the system - they can be turned off later from the Your Account or Profile pages, so it's not a change that's going to force users to have these options enabled.

If anyone doesn't want their settings turned on please post a reply in this thread. I'm also adding a poll to see what the consensus is on updating existing users before I go ahead and implement it.

Turn them on! It's annoying when people don't realise you sent them a message...

For the No's, can I assume this is due to emails? How about if I just enable popups across the board?

hows this sound:
enable the popups for everyone, and include an option to enable the emails as part of the popup?
e.g. "You have a Personal Message waiting to be read...
...would you like to receive email notifications of new PMs in future?"

and how about sending an email to everyone who has unread messages that are over 1 month old, to remind them to log in (maybe even include a link to reset their password, or a password reminder, e.g. "p******d")?

Would pop up stuff stop folks like headhunter and ben from seeing here? (would it show as something more fun on some work servers if stuff popped up?)

I don't want emails, I get bugged when someone posts in that "on the go at the mo"thread because that sends out stuff even though I've told it not to..
How about in the forums page where it might say "1 unread message" (mine currently says no new messages :( ) You change the font and format to even bigger if they have a PM?

The "popup" is just a javascripted div layer, so it shouldn't trigger anything on a work machine - if javascript is turned off then it won't appear anyway.

I'll look at adjusing the font too, that shouldn't be too hard.

"on to go at the mo" thread? Wassat?

i think he means that "Sticky: Do you have any projects on the go right now?" thread. :P
(i just call it "the 'projects' thread", as it is a bit of a mouthful ;))

Ah. Well, removing the notification should just be a case of following the link in the email to turn it off

Ooops, forgot all about this - I've updated all users to have the popup notification enabled, but I've left the email setting as is for everyone. I'll also look at adding the ability to send out emails to anyone with old unread messages, but it won't be for a couple of weeks at least. If you want this turned off just go the Profile link in the menu and turn off the setting.

Hopefully most people have noticed the change to the link for messages.
