POLL: Who thinks the Shoutbox is an essential feature?

Postby Spack » Tue Apr 07, 2009 4:59 pm

I'm in the process of finalising features for the shiny new AoS site (yes, you heard right, a new AoS site is imminent!), and I'm going through the applications that are on here right now that I haven't got running on the test site. One of those is the Shoutbox ("what Shoutbox" I hear you cry! See the left side on the non-forum pages, it's the scrolly chat thing :P). I could implement it, but it's yet another thing to clutter the pages and so I want to check that it's worth doing first. So, please vote.

shoutbox

Postby Herne » Tue Apr 07, 2009 8:25 pm

I like the shoutbox feature - but wonder if it would get used more if it was on the forum pages - afterall thats where most of us spend our time rather than on the front 'news' page afterall....

I voted no. I agree it makes more sense for it to be in a place with virtual footfall (the forums) but I don't think the site really needs it to be honest.

i do like it and have used it many times, however i dont catch it much, is there a way you can have a scrolling shoutbox at the top of the forums page, only 1 line/comment deep and stretched so it doesnt take much room and blends in?

hope you understand :P

either way im happy dan , u do a great job!

Not really fussed to be honest. I've used it once I think. It would be far better placed in the forums section rather than the front page. I barely look at the news page!

If it does get retained for the new site then it'll be in the sidebar on every page on the site.

Could it scroll on the bottom like a news ticker?

i think its useful to shout out new images in your gallery instead of cluttering up the forum sometimes.

and since its on the main page everyone looks at it

I think it's pretty handy, but agree that it would be better on the forums page, especially if it's unobtrusive.
I arrive directly to the forums from favourites, so often miss it.

I've closed the poll. I found a shoutbox that uses AJAX so it's almost realtime (it'll update without the page refreshing), and it was a simple install, so I've included it on the new site.
