Presence and activity

Postby mattjgilbert » Fri Nov 09, 2007 2:00 pm

Is it possible to show the red/green presence icon (or similar) next to someone's name when they are on-line and active in the forum? It's helpful to know who is around. Showing what people are currently looking at or doing as part of their public profile is good too. I've often found it useful (on warseer say) to see what other people are looking at. I've found some interesting threads and conversations that way that I would otherwise have missed by seeing what people I share views with (or not actually) have to say about other topics.

Jeez.. do I sound like a stalker...?

yes. :P

nah just kidding. :)

we already have an "Online Now" list (bottom right of the Home page), as well as a list at the bottom of each thread to say who else is reading it.

do we need something more than that?

We really don't have that many active threads at once (only 6-8 at a time tops?)
The home page tells you whose on line throughout the site, as does the forums page.
Its another one I'd really suggest spack only does if its really simple and he's bored.(unless suddenly traffic goes up 200%)

I agree, only 'needed' if Spack gets bored. Or the site activity jumps big again.

I guess nobody noticed that the Who's Online title on the forum home page right at the bottom is clickable - it goes here, and you can which pages in the forum people are currently looking at ;)

While I might be able to add a variant of this to the profile, it might not be that useful - if you look at the profile it'll show what they were looking at when you clicked, not necessarily what they are looking at right now.

matt, if you click on the person's avatar or name in the left side when viewing posts you'll get a popup menu and one of the options is to find more posts by that user, will that do?

PS. you missed a cracking pissup on wed night ;)

ive got:

People Online:
Visitors: 66
Members: 5
Total: 71

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Online Now:
01: Belgarion_82
02: killmaimburn
03: LordMalekTheRedKnight
04: Solar
05: Ben

but the only clickable parts are the names themselves. :?

ahh i just found - not on the home page, but at the bottom of the forums page.

could you modify the home page so that "People Online" (or "Online Now") can be clicked and leads to that same page?

cheers :)

Yeah, the forum home page (as in, the first page of the forums). Maybe I should have put index page

I could, but they're technically not related - the info on the site home page in the right hand side is for the whole PHP Nuke site, the Who's Online page is only for the forum itself (so for instance, someone could have looked at the site recently, say the Gallery, but not actually have any forum activity).

How about I put a "Who's Online" link in the forum menu?
