Private message notification change

Postby Spack » Wed Feb 20, 2008 5:30 pm

I've adjusted the way the PM notification is generated - it's no longer a separate popup window, it now pops up a dialog in the middle of the screen once the page has loaded with an OK and Cancel button (OK to view PM, Cancel to ignore). I prefer this method, hopefully the rest of you do too :)

one downside with this change is that we no longer have the ability to right click to open the PM in a new window (something i would often do if i was in the middle of doing something in that window when the PM came in). :(

would it be possible to set it so it always opens the PM in a new window? :?:

cheers :)

I'll see if can make it have 3 buttons - one to open in current window, one to open in new, and one to cancel (dependent upon javascript though). Failing that how about a user selectable setting in the profile for new/existing window?

sounds good to me. :)

il be honest, for the longest time AoS was on my blocked-popup list so i wouldnt get the PM alerts: i had a bad experience one time where i was in the middle of writing a big post, got a PM, clicked it, and then lost my post (:angryfire). ive only recently started using the alerts again, and as long as im not using my window already, or i remember to click to open in a new window, its fine (and helpful).

ive just gotten used to using it, and then youve gone and changed it. :P

cheers :)

p.s. something else that would be good is for the alert to popup as soon as the PM comes in, rather than waiting until you refresh/open a new window.
EDIT: p.p.s. while on the topic of PMs, would it be possible to show the message you are replying to under the text box, like how it shows the thread you are replying to under the post text box?

That would require some AJAX and having the browser continually poll the server asking if there's a PM. I don't think that's a great idea, and it'll be hard to implement.

I'll look into it, should be possible.

I'm just testing a custom 3 button javascript popup for the PM stuff.

How's the new solution? I need to reformat it a bit, but functionally it works.

Its also bad to be running the extra processes that way. Its possible to do, but highly 'not recommended'.

i just experienced the new alert - on the whole, it is an improvement. :)

if i may suggest a couple of tweaks though:

- change "Ignore" to something like "Read Later" (you arent ignoring the PM, or the sender, afterall)
- change the font colour for the 3 options to make it a bit clearer (i had to stare to be able to read them)

hope that helps :)

cheers

I'm still tweaking it - the font on the buttons is now white, is that better?
