Rules Sticky

Postby Ben » Mon Nov 12, 2007 12:48 am

Perhaps we could discuss all of the issues that should be agreed to before the game (Broken RAW) and have those listed in a sticky post. I am not suggesting some superlong FAQ and we all hash out how everything should be played (although that wouldn't hurt) instead these are the known holes that should be addressed before you pick up dice.

Example:
Assaulting Skimmers: Rules require base to hull contact. That is impossible with a flying base.

The difference in this and a FAQ is you are not relying on what some random group on the internet agreed was right. Many of the issues are solved with small groups so the target audience are those that are going to play at a different location with different people and would like a handy list so they don't forget to clear something up before hand.

It would also be handy for tourney organizers since they can call out how the tourney will address those issues in the rules up front.

ive asked Mattjgilbert to talk to Spack about the possibility of us hosting a mirror of the Warseer 40K FAQ (at present i cannot download the FAQ direct from Warseer, as you need to be logged in ).

something we were sure to do when working on that was to give multiple options for an answer where appropriate, rather than try to pick just one answer for the FAQ when opinion was divided. that way, if its not straight foward you are your opponent decide how you want to play it (even if you have already agreed to play by the FAQ), but with all the information and arguments etc boiled down into a number of alternatives to speed up the process at the table.

i know thats not quite what you were suggesting, but it may be a good place to start. Niknokitueu also has a pregame list that might be helpful here.

anyway, here are a few for your list:

- Shooting at Vehicles: can your own cover provide Obscured Targets rolls to the enemy? (RaW = yes, GaP = no, Cover Saves precedent = no)
- Sz 2 Jetbikes hovering over Sz1 Terrain: do they shrink (for LOS purposes)? (RaW = yes, GaP = no, Skimmers precedent = no)
- Ordnance Blasts: how do we count hits? (RaW = N/A - rules dont cover it, GaP = as per normal Blasts, RaI = method unconfirmed, but it is supposed to be posible)

hope that helps :)

Thanks Tim. That is what I was thinking. Come up with a list of what we need to discuss before hand mainly because I forget something until it happens.

There are many questions or there were many questions we solved here or weve been talking about and Malek is usually the one asking or suggesting to debate these issues pre-game. however if I come to think about it, there are so many things, fortunately some of them quite rare, but nevertheless, many things that you would need to discuss and I forgot most of them allready (tho I would remember the conclusion we came to, I would never remember to discuss everything pre-game)

So to cut the crap, YES, a checklist of issues to clear before a game, especially with a new opponent would be a great thing to create!

One more thing. the warseer FAQ has been mentioned. I guess we could simply have an AOS FAQ like that and continue to update it. Id be more than willing to help

a pregame list is certainly an ideal (at least until GW get their act together). unfortunately in the real world there seems to be a bit of a stigma attached to clarifying things pregame that might not even be an issue during the game itself.

lots of people are happy to just muddle through and gloss over issues and take their chances that it wont turn out to spoil their game half way through. some have even suggested that trying to clarify issues pregame is an underhand tactic designed to confuse opponents!

then again, these same sort of people look down on defining Terrain before the game too... *smacks forehead*

anyways, maybe this is a topic for a different thread...

considering that a lot of the most active AoS posters are also WS members, i dont think we need to create our own separate FAQ. and even though im no longer a member of Warseer i will still be helping Matt and Co with the WS FAQs.

if there is something wrong/missing in the WS FAQs i would much rather AoS helped to get that fixed than create its own spinnoff. :)

Actually, I was thinking that the WS stuff should become a spin off of the AOS original :)

Nah, Matt's put a lot of work into the WS FAQ and given that they have a much higher user base it makes more sense for it to be there. If Matt will let me mirror it here though I'd be happy to sort it out.

Thank you for that Spack. I like having one place to go so I will keep my fingers crossed.

Perhaps we should start on the checklist. Should we do that in this thread or create a new one?

Well given that there was a brief kerfuffle about its format at the end. Maybe Matt, in cooperation with the warseer lot who are the primary hoster would allow us to host the document in the format style he created (which was easier to read etc), you could even offer the link to warseer so that warseer users may get the version in that format also.
It could be used as a hype up in anticipation of the eldar one, since its notification is now 8th after a dawn of war update rumour.

Yes we can mirror the WS one here, I've no issue with that. I'll dig out the original RTF I created.

Shall I make it a pdf instead? That was what I was expecting to be available on WS but Nick wanted to try something new.

I'd prefer PDF too, but either is fine. Why not put both up? ;)

How about posting a new thread in the Rules forum and attaching it, and I'll make the thread stickied. Do you want it locked too?

Is it also possible to offer for Nick\wintermute\other to have the link, if they so choose to add the pdf link to the site on warseer?

before sticking it up it might be worth sticking those amendments to instant death I pointed out in. So its the most current.
