Site Maintenance

Postby Spack » Tue Feb 19, 2008 9:32 pm

Sorry about the downtime for the past - a bit of unscheduled maintenance had to be done, I broke MySQL and ended up upgrading to a newer version, along with a new operating system kernel, it was a bit touch and go and one point but the site pulled through and is out of danger :)

maybe its just because im always on, but i notice a little bit every now and again. usually just 10-20 mins at most, never more than an hour IIRC. so i wasnt too worried. :P

so does this upgrade mean any noticeable changes for us? any new functions available?

cheers :)

Not yet, but it should help site stability. It's a newer version of MySQL, and a whole heap of operating system file and library updates. The MySQL changes alone should improve the database performance.

fyrebyrd, you had it easy - I was sat screaming at the monitor as apt was informing me that the linux kernel was being removed. Luckily there's a last ditch "are you sure?" to which is rapidly hit N. I got the new updates in place, click Restart in KDE and it died. I still had SSH so I was able to issue a shutdown command to reboot, when it came back up I could then install MySQL and everything came back up smoothly.

So this would make us one of those suicide sites the media are on a witch hunt for 8O
I was happily having a pint, totally blasé as to how close to the skin of my teeth all my valuable posts came to lemmingitus.(with a little push from spack :P )
I hope the upgrade provides you with a lot of usefull bits and bobs (you can now use those newer bits of software you were talking about right?) or at least is a bit of a labour saver safety and maintenece wise (have you got it so that you can mod threads on your mobile yet? )
Carry on all the good work Spack.
