New Player Looking for Armies (UK)

Postby ghost_whistler » Sun Oct 05, 2008 2:56 pm

Hello, I am new to 40k and live in the UK. I post on a few other forums so apologies if you’re sick of seeing all this. However I am posting to see if anyone has any miniatures they are looking to sell. I’m primarily looking for Necrons/DE. Those are the armies that interest me. But if anyone has a good deal, regardless of faction, and lives in the UK (i’m not dealing with overseas buyers/sellers, sorry) then I’ll take a look. Thanks

Hi! Welcome to the wacky world of 40K and welcome to the site!
I'd like to help you out, but...
1-I live in the US :D
2-I don't have any Necron or DE :(

But you came to the right place for your quest. The other members of this site will do their best to help you find what you are seeking. Just don't feed them please!

Once again, welcome and good luck!

Hi, welcome to the site,

I have a DE army i bought second hand a while ago with the intention of redoing the models,

they are red gore based (simple 3 colour scheme) painted to a basic standard,

I believe the army involves,

Achaon and retinue

Dark eldar warriors (2 squads)

Raider

Talos

7 reaver jet bikes i believe,

the figures and bikes come in a carry case, the talos and raider does not.

and a couple of other pieces, if you are interested i can dig them out and give you a more specific list, i do believe i have the current codex aswell.

reply here or pm me,

Thanks, but I'd rather you told me what you want for them. I'm no good at haggling.

Right here goes,

Upon further inspection i found the army consists of:

HQ:

Archon and Dracon with two Incubi

Troops:

18 Dark Eldar Warrior Squad

18 Dark Eldar Warrior Squad with Raider transport (BTW the transport can only take 10, but you can split these two squads down, squads can be anything of 10-20 in size)

Fast Attack:

1 Reaver Succubus
7 Reaver jetbikes

10 Hellions (all still in original packaging but a example pic follows)

Heavy Support:

1 Talos

Album with pictures in:

Ok so you can the pics, it is all painted as i described earlier apart from 6 reaver bikes (but are undercoated) and the 10 hellions. Included in the package will be the carry case (holds everything apart from the raider and talos with will be in their own little box) the current army rule book (upgraded re-released edition, not sure about the rumours but a new one might be coming out in the next year or two £15- £20?!? who knows) and some jungle trees for good measure along with a box of DE spares. All models based to a good standard aswell.

Ok i can see a few of ways for this:

Army set 1:

HQ, all the troops and raider, carry case, codex, jungle trees and bits.

Retail: £102

Army Set 2:

HQ, All the reavers jetbikes, all the troops and raider, carry case, codex, jungle trees and bits.

Retail: £158

Army Set 3:

HQ, All the revers jetbikes and hellions, all the troops and raider, carry case, codex, jungle trees and bits (basically everything)

Retail: £218

According to the royal mail website, £7.12 P&P recorded delivery (this is Army Set 3, 2kg spot on!)

The prices are off the GW website, however if you follow the link in the top right of this website you could buy this stuff for 20%-25% cheaper than GW.

I have not included the carry case or trees in the pricing.

So you can see the pics, details etc, I will message you possible prices :)

to be honest I'm starting to think that DE may well be too expensive for me to collect. YOu need a lot of them (unlike the Necrons) given how cheap their units, besides I don't know anything about them - but that goes for all the factions.

I didn't realise how expensive all this was going to be.

Thanks for the offers, I will give it some more thought but while i like the look of DE i don't know if they are for me.

It's a shame there aren't more starter options really.

IMO the best way to start is with small games ("Combat Patrol" @400/500 pts) and build up gradually: you dont need to buy a big army all in one go in order to play (when my wife started we would play 100-200 pt games, which is just 1-2 squads).

the AoBR box is a good place to start, as it includes templates, dice, rulebook and models. you can either use the models, share the set with a friend, or swap/sell them to get things you need. on top of that all you need is your codex book, and you are good to go. of course, if you have absolutely no interest in either of the armies in the box, and you have no one to swap with/sell to, then you may as well buy the small book separately (plenty of people are buying the boxes just to split up and resell the contents).

start small, with a couple of squads of troops, then add a character to lead them, maybe a transport vehicle, an elite squad or some more heavy support etc gradually.

anyway, i hope that helps :)

you could start here mate,

This is £40, gives you 20 warriors, 1 Raider Transport and 5 Reaver Jetbikes with a bit of scenery aswell :)

But like tim said, i would also recommend the Assault on Black reach Box set,

£32 gets you two army's and rules of how to play, with a beginners guide :)

Just ask any Qs if needed,

I'm not necessarily after a big army all in one go (bigger than 500points), it's just a matter of economics :D

I considered the BR set, but I'm no more interested in Marines than I am Orks and since the world and his mother are doing the same thing by selling off the models they don't want I can't take the risk of buying BR (which I could) just to sell it apart on ebay or whatever. The gentleman in the shop claimed you could get £200 for the stuff therein, but I think you'd be lucky to make your money back. I already have the rulebook (i wanted the main one because I also like the background) so buying it for that and selling the rest is again not too smart. It would be different if i had a load of people ready to pay big bucks for the parts it contained of course!

Thing is, without the codex (which between when I first went to the shop and went I went last where I bought the main rulebook, had doubled in price!), it's difficult to make informed choices about what units to buy. DE however I know are very cheap units to field, which is what makes it difficult since a box of warriors is only about 80 points! I have no problem witha 500 point army for now, I'd be happy to build one (though i'd like an interesting army - not just regulars + leader, even for he Necrons), but for the DE that's still not going to be cheap.

It would have been cool to see a BR type set for every faction, so you could have Necrons vs Tau for example, or Eldar vs Chaos, or whatever. But you are limited to just Orks and Marines, which, as I say, I'm not that interested in. Even the Battleforce boxes are expensive - and don't come as a complete army, you still need a codex and a leader at the very least (the DE one + leader is still not even 500 points afaict).

I just think that it's tough for prospective newcomers to find a decent point of entry, other than BR. There doesn't seem to be any gentler way for people who don't really want BR.
