citadel paint spray gun

Postby Freddie the fist » Sun Feb 07, 2010 5:33 pm

Hi guys. Need your opinions. Im thinking about getting a spray gun to save time on base coating my minis. Is it worth it? do you get a nice even finish? is it easy to use? or should i just stick to the time consuming method of doing it all by hand? let me know what you think.
Cheers guys

definately!!! coloured sprays are ur friend ;)

Its the main use for my airbrush, getting the main colour onto the model quickly and evenly has made my painting that much more bearable, as painting has always been a chore for me ;)

From what I've heard you're much better off getting even just a cheap airbrush than the GW one. Avoid the GW one like the plague.

I tried an airbrush once for doing camo on my tanks, but I couldn't get the GW paint to the right consistency. I'd recommend you use acrylic medium rather than water to thin the paints - with water it often ended up pooling when spraying. In the end I switched to Tamiya spray paints and card masking, I lent the airbrush to my brother-in-law - no idea if he found it useful, I keep forgetting to ask!

Ive got the GW one and have had no problems with it. It makes painting armies alot easier, esp marines I would imagine. The markings on the mixing bottle gives you the ratio of paint to water, tho I do always tend to try it out on some sprue or test model first.

Another option if you want an easy way to undercoat is to go to a paint mixing shop and get them to colour match what you want in to a spray can, I got a 400ml can of warlock purple that way for my chaos marines. It can be expensive (the can I got cost £15), but saved me having to put 2-3 coats of it on by hand!

I'd not heard of colour matching for spray cans before.....very interesting. I could do with some ultrmarine blue. Where did you go?

In my town there is a small paint shop (next to the Sausage Tree, for those in Wycombe), that did it, but Im sure places like auto part shops and DIY stores provide that sort of service.

I had no idea GW still did coloured sprays. I have some that are so old they've seperated in the can and won't remix.
Oh and Spack, if you put a tiny blob of washing up liquid or powder detergent (not enough to make it foam, literally a tiny bit) in your paint/water mix it breaks up the surface tension so it doesn't pool in the same way.

I really should learn to read thoroughly before responding. GW don't do coloured sprays and haven't for years. Damn. They were really good too

No proof of purchase, no return!

Interestingly My brother found a can of catachan camo in the loft yesterday. If you are just undercoating stuff then get some Halfords car sprays.

What about if he cut out the piece of carpet?

Would you cut him some slack then?
