Hey all
just got in from my first games night since the release of 5th ed. i spent the first part of the night watching a 1500 pts battle (Eldar vs
SoB), discussing rules, looking things up, and generally cheering on both sides.
the game finished with an hour to go before closing time, so i managed to get in a quick 5th ed
CP - Plague Zombies vs
SoB. we used
CP restrictions @ 400pts, played Annihilation with 12" deployment zones and used the 5th ed roll-off process for deployment/first turn. the
SoB consisted of 1 squad of sisters (in a Rhino) and 1 smaller squad of Celestians (in an Immolator). i took my standard
Plague Zombie force.
the game ended as a Win to the Plague Zombies:
- i chased off both squads and destroyed the Immolator, scoring 3
KPs
- the
SoB wiped out one pack of Zombies and killed the Sludge Beast, earning 2
KPs (all in the first couple of turns!).
i managed to hide the last member of Zombie pack #1 behind the Wreck, denying my opponent the chance of a Draw. the game ended on Turn 5, with the surviving Rhino being persued by about 10 Zombies. it was very fast and furious, and quite bloody. on more than one occasion i felt the need to bellow "BRAAAAINSSS!" in my best Zombie voice.
things i noticed:
- i felt the sting of
FNP being ignored by AP1 weapons (Melta Guns)
- i enjoyed Running (especially to counter bad scatter rolls when arriving)
- getting to hit Vehicles in their own turn was very nice
- double attacks when charging compared to 4th ed
SAP
- re-roll to wound w/Poison
- gentler
DS rules made me more daring, even though they didnt actually come into effect
- Sweeping Advances not being denied due to a lack of
B2B was handy
- being able to auto-pass Difficult Terrain rolls when charging from 1" away was a godsend (under 4th you would fail on a double1 as you could end your move within 1")
- hitting Rear Armour on Vehicles in
CC meant i actually stood a chance against his tanks (and he couldnt Tank Shock me with impunity)
rules we didnt use:
since all the fighting took place in the far corner of the
SoB DZ (seriously, we used like 1 sq foot of the table
), we didnt need to use the new
LOS rules, or the improved Cover Saves/screening rules. we didnt use the Multiple Templates or Going to Ground rules either, and i never DS'd into Difficult Terrain.
it was a fun game and the evening has made me look forward to properly starting 5th ed. i wouldnt call it an
improvement yet, but it was a nice change. the wording in the rulebook was noticably tightened up, which was nice (we would look specific things up, and they would actually be covered in the rules). thankfully there were no "WTF" moments, and no-one felt robbed by the
KP rules.
hopefully i will be able to get in another 5th ed game in a couple of weeks (in the meanwhile i will continue to play 4th at home).
cheers
