Project tau begins...

Postby Ljundhammer » Sat Feb 27, 2010 10:40 pm

Hi all,

A new Plog for me to forget about in a seemingly record time...

A new army beckoned, because I've soooo finished all my others  , but I'm bored of painting solely red and black for my IG, black and white for for my DeathWing, and whatever flavour of space marines takes my fancy at the time.

The Tau have taken me, only due to battlesuits, which are both a really cool concept & have some of the best (and most affordable) ForgeWorld models available IMO. So I've taken the plunge, thanks to ForgeWorld, and our friends at Gaming Figures I have the bare bones of a battlesuit heavy 1500 point army, whether it's any good remains to be seen...

I'm wanting to use a variety of new painting methods on this army, as for the last 20 years or thereabouts (I can't believe it's been that long) I've painted what I need to paint and moved on. I fancy having an army I can be proud of having painted, so this is the one for me.

This will be a long and sporadically updated Plog, as I'm a slow painter at the best of times. But it might inspire me to keep going. If no-one reads this, then hey ho, but hopefully some people will follow me along on this painting odyssey...

I'll keep the rest of this space free to summarise my frustrations & update as I go along. So in that case:

Ok, test scheme is done.

This paint scheme is is based loosley on the "GW Tau Scheme", but darker (i.e. GRIMDARKERER) and more pink! The pink has been influenced by this vehicle:

Now, while this scheme may work IRL, it'll look a bit gay on my tau army, so I'm toning it down a bit.

Without further ado, here's the first test scheme:
Image
This is a crappy picture (I'm getting used to using a camera on miniatures), but shows the colours relatively well.

The next pictures don't show the colour as well, but by the time I'd checked the picture, I'd run out of light, so they'll have to do for the moment.

The tau symbol needs tidying up & it seem I forgot a bit of painting on the chest  , but all in all I think it's ok. I've tried to keep the colours simple & have purposefully shied away from adding too many lenses or 'shiny bits' or 'bling' that can be fun to paint on a Space Marine or Guardsman. I'm not sure if it looks too boring though - so I'll be adding a weathering effect soon, to see if a) I can do it, and b) if it'll liven the model up a bit.

I'm not too happy with the base colours, any ideas appreciated for a desert scheme.

Any comments or criticisms greatly received...

For my record more than anything, the scheme colours are:
Spray Chaos Black
Paint with watered down Scorched Brown
Cloth:
Cathlan Brown, then Kemri Brown
Armour:
50:50 Tau Sept Ochre: Tallarn flesh
Devlan Mud in armour creases
Light coat of watery Tallarn flesh
Highlight with Elf flesh
Lenses:
Midnight, enchanted and ice blue
Sept colour:
Mecherite red

Always interested in seeing what other folks are working on.
A tau army sounds great, particularly a battlesuit heavy one.
You might even get Tim interested, he was working on some Tau stuff.
You're off to a good start by committing to a log, now post some pics please.

With using so much tan and brown on the tau, you might want something different on the base to contrast it.
You could do the rocks in tones of grey highlighted with light grey and white.
You could do something like a "Mars Red" type scheme.
Or you could do an original tau type planet, maybe something inthe blue/grey scheme.

Least, I think it would set off the colors on the models.

Good start LH. I reckon to lift the figure (better pics will tell if you need to :) ) you should:

1. add a secondary colour (like white) in small places
2. add a small spot or two of scorched grass to the base (adds more colour again)

Take a look at BDA's Tau. I wouldn't necessarily do as much white as he was but it gives you and idea of how it changes the model.

Using the maxim "if you want something done right, get your wife to do it", new pictures are ready. I'm starting weathering this afternoon...

Timewizard - I'll try the grey bases, as all my other armies are on a grey base scheme, so I'll see if it works. However, I think the 'classic' GW scorched brown/graveyard earth would make more sense with with the colour scheme - I'll give both a go...

Matt - I like the white idea, I'll give it go - re the bases - definitely need work - this was very temporary!

I like it!
Would second a "contrast" colour though.
Caspar did his tree huggers in a similar scheme, with contrasts that are a sort of burnt ochreish almost purple hue, don't know how he did it.
