Daemon list for tonight

Postby mattjgilbert » Wed Mar 03, 2010 2:16 pm

Playing our mate Martyn tonight. He'll have either Dark Eldar or Dark Angels, not sure which (or wytch) he'll take.

I thought I'd take the list I played with at WHW the other weekend but couldn't find the saved version and had binned the paper one. Never mind. I tweaked it anyway and have gone for 2 icons (don't normally take them... thought I'd give it a go) and swapped the LoC for a second Soul Grinder (might as well field both the newly painted models). Removing the LoC freed up a lot of points so I was able to add bloodcrushers led by skulltaker on a jugger for some added fun. If he's up against a Talos that will be interesting (any roll to wound of 4+ will auto-kill it I think (4+ rending and instant detah hits)).

Anyway, here's the list. I'll let you know how it goes.

HQ: Bloodthirster
Unholy Might
Blessings of The Blood God

Elite: 5 Flamers of Tzeentch

Troops: 7 Plaguebearers of Nurgle
Icon

Troops: 11 Bloodletters of Khorne
Icon

Troops: 8 Bloodletters of Khorne

Heavy Support: Soul Grinder of Chaos
Phlegm

Heavy Support: Soul Grinder of Chaos
Phlegm

Elite: 2 Bloodcrushers of Khorne
1 x Rending
1 x Instrument of Chaos

HQ: Skulltaker
Juggernaut of Khorne

Total Roster Cost: 1499

It started out as 10 and 10 and then to juggle points I had to lose one (10 and 9). I made it 8 and 11 because 8 was fluffy and 11 meant one more wound to soak up on the icon bearing squad!

Method in my madness you see ;)

I like the list, the only thing I would definately change if it were my list would be to place the Icon on the Bloodcrusher unit rather than the squishy Bloodletters. I've always thought that Icons (if you use them) should be given to the most resilient units.

Then the only other thing I would consider changing would be the one hit wonder Flamers for Fiends of Slaanesh.

Any thoughts on how you would split the 8 units into favoured / unfavoured forces?

Be interested to see what you make of the Icons. IMO the benefits don't outweigh the costs on paper (obv haven't tried them in practise yet).

I'm always too nervous on the deepstrikes without my Icons and even more so when you have the huge footprint of Soul Grinders.

I agree with Bara. My icons always land in the wrong place, or are shot to sh*t before hand. I would disagree with always putting them on the most resliliant though... I find icons are great for 'laser designating' the unit you would prefer gets shot, while your other nasty units stride forward to engage the enemy.

Well Si used the icons to good effect at WHW so I thought I'd try them. The cost has always put me off before too.

He had a mono-nurgle force though and icons are hard to kill with PB squads who go to ground.

Could have taken fiends but they've been out the last few games and I thought I'd give them a rest (last game they (3 of them, 1 with might) charged and bounced off stuny's sternguard unit causing no wounds and were all killed in reply).

Good question. How about this:

Turn 1 preference
HQ: Bloodthirster
Troops: 7 Plaguebearers of Nurgle
Heavy Support: Soul Grinder of Chaos
Elite: 2 Bloodcrushers of Khorne & HQ: Skulltaker

Leaving in reserve
Heavy Support: Soul Grinder of Chaos
Troops: 11 Bloodletters of Khorne
Troops: 8 Bloodletters of Khorne
Elite: 5 Flamers of Tzeentch

The icon squads could easily swap over.

I'd like to play a slannesh list but the daemonettes are too weak. I'd only do it If I had 4 heralds on chariots and 18 fiends ;)

Drop 2 of the flamers for 2 fiends, 1 with the strength upgrade.
In most situations you're going to lose the flamers on turn after they deep strike and so need to make the most out of themselves. However you drop in you'll only get 3 templates shooting due to deep strike deployment.

True, althought the others can still fire with the other mode.

Yeah, I think I will swap them.

EDIT: done

Force split looks like this now:

Turn 1 preference
HQ: Bloodthirster
Troops: 7 Plaguebearers of Nurgle
Heavy Support: Soul Grinder of Chaos
Elite: 2 Bloodcrushers of Khorne & HQ: Skulltaker
Elite: 2 Fiends

Leaving in reserve
Heavy Support: Soul Grinder of Chaos
Troops: 11 Bloodletters of Khorne
Troops: 8 Bloodletters of Khorne
Elite: 3 Flamers of Tzeentch

Which actual makes their shooting worse as your opponents can then allocate all the saveable wounds to save certain models.

Turned out I was fighting Martyn's Ravenwing.

Game ended after 6 turns in a draw (7 KPs each...starting with 10 each)

Bloodthirster Survived unwounded. Killed bikes and two landspeeders
7 Plaguebearers of Nurgle Survived. Wiped out a 6 man bike squad much to Martyn's disgust!
Soul Grinder of Chaos Died to a multi-melta after penetrating the speeder in CC and getting Immobilised as the worst possible result for it. Bye bye SG next turn
2 Bloodcrushers of Khorne & HQ: Skulltaker Soaked up a silly amount of firepower and killed an attackbike and Sammael
2 Fiends One got to attack and managed to fluff it big time. Stopped a speeder shooting for a turn before being shot to bits
Soul Grinder of Chaos Survived but lost the maw cannon. Killed bikes and an attack bike
11 Bloodletters of Khorne Help bring down the daemons with the icon, then helped kill Sammael and then let me down big time by failing most of their cover saves while having gone to ground and then being wiped out in CC (end the game in a draw)
8 Bloodletters of Khorne Pathetic run moves and shot to bits acheiving nothing
3 Flamers of Tzeentch Waste of points unless you count area denial as Martyn was afraid to go anywhere near them. Died after killing a single bike.
